Company

Company overview

Canterbury Park Holding Corporation runs Canterbury Park in Shakopee, Minnesota. Its Casino supplies most of the company’s revenue, but it does not earn money by betting against players. It takes a share of poker pots and charges table-game players fees based on their buy-ins. Minnesota permits these games only without the company acting as the bank: players’ losses fund other players’ winnings, rather than becoming company revenue.

The racetrack hosts seasonal live horse racing and accepts bets on races broadcast from other tracks. Bettors wager into shared pools; Canterbury Park keeps part of the money after paying winners, race purses, required taxes and other charges. Visiting customers also pay for food and drinks, and the company serves catered events. Separately, it develops surplus land around the racetrack through land sales and joint ventures.

The business depends largely on local visitors’ spending. Racing also depends on competitive purses attracting enough horses and trainers to support wagering. State law requires part of Casino revenue to fund racing purses. Racing and card games require Minnesota Racing Commission licenses, while simulcast operations need annual consent from both the commission and the Minnesota Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association.

Canterbury Park’s results depend chiefly on local casino spending, making nearby Mystic Lake and Running Aces more direct competitors to watch than Churchill Downs.

  • Churchill Downs and Canterbury Park both earn commissions from customers’ horse-race bets, so demand for that wagering matters to both. Canterbury Park also takes bets on televised Churchill Downs races, including the Kentucky Derby, making interest in those races relevant to its simulcast wagering revenue.
