Company

Company overview

ZW Data Action Technologies Inc. connects brands with influencers who create promotional content and manages advertising campaigns across search, social media and mobile apps. Clients, primarily small and medium-sized businesses, pay for these marketing services, which generate most of its revenue. Operations are now mainly outside mainland China. The company has wound down its former mainland business of buying search-engine marketing rights and reselling their use to clients at a premium.

Smaller businesses earn subscription revenue from its BIF blockchain-powered enterprise-management platform and license marketing-related intellectual property held by Cnet Technology (HK) Limited, formerly Rahula Digital Media (HK) Limited. Revenue is concentrated in four customers, with the largest supplying a substantial share on its own. The company also relies on two suppliers for most of its advertising-resource costs.

Its remaining China operations depend on licensed operating companies controlled through contracts, known as VIEs, because foreign-investment restrictions prevent its wholly owned Chinese subsidiary from holding the required internet-information-service licenses. Continued operation also depends on improving core-business margins and reducing operating losses, or obtaining additional equity or debt financing.

  • KNOREX LTD. offers advertisers a software alternative to ZW Data Action Technologies Inc.’s cross-channel campaign-management services, selling access to XPO mainly through advertising agencies. Watch its small and mid-sized agency customer base for signs of demand for tools that plan, manage and measure advertising across search, social media and apps.

  • Viant Technology Inc. competes with ZW Data Action Technologies Inc. in managing online advertising campaigns: marketers and agencies pay to use its platform to plan, buy and measure digital ads, with an option for Viant to run campaigns for them. Watch demand for that managed service, where the overlap with ZW Data’s campaign work is clearest.

  • System1, Inc. and ZW Data Action Technologies Inc. both depend on advertisers’ spending to attract customers: System1 brings online visitors to advertisers and earns advertising revenue, while brands pay ZW Data to manage digital campaigns and engage customers. System1’s revenue from monetizing that traffic is a useful gauge of the customer-acquisition spending behind ZW Data’s marketing business outside mainland China.

  • Meta Platforms and ZW Data Action Technologies Inc. are both exposed to brands’ digital-marketing budgets: Meta sells advertising space on social apps, while ZW Data charges for social-media campaigns and influencer marketing outside mainland China. Watch advertising revenue in Meta’s Family of Apps business for a read on the spending that also supports ZW Data’s services.
