Company

Company overview

Callaway Golf Company designs and sells products for amateur and professional golfers. Golf clubs and balls bring in most of its revenue, with clubs the largest product line. These include Callaway clubs and balls and Odyssey putters. It also sells golf and lifestyle apparel, bags and accessories under Callaway, TravisMathew and OGIO. Retailers and distributors are its main buyers; golfers also buy directly through its brand websites and stores.

Demand depends heavily on how many people play golf and how often they play, especially for balls and golf-related apparel and accessories. New equipment launches account for a substantial share of sales, and equipment sales are concentrated in the first half of the year as retailers stock up for the season. Its clubs and balls are designed to meet USGA and R&A rules; revised ball-testing standards will require new compliant designs.

The company has sold Jack Wolfskin and a controlling interest in Topgolf and Toptracer, refocusing its operating business on equipment, apparel and gear. It retains a minority investment in Topgolf and Toptracer but no longer controls Topgolf’s daily operations or strategy. Contractual restrictions limit its ability to sell that investment.

Callaway’s results hinge chiefly on golfers’ equipment spending and competition with TaylorMade and Ping, neither of which appears in this list.

  • Acushnet competes for the same golfers’ spending as Callaway through Titleist clubs and balls and FootJoy golf wear. Its Titleist golf-ball sales are especially worth watching: Callaway identifies Acushnet as a major ball rival with a leading position in the United States.

  • Callaway buys KBS-branded and made-to-order golf shafts from FST Corp. to assemble into its clubs, tying its club production to this supplier. Watch FST’s delivery lead times and manufacturing capacity, both competitive factors in its shaft business.

  • Under Armour competes with Callaway and TravisMathew for golfers’ clothing purchases, making golf apparel the overlap to watch rather than Callaway’s clubs and balls.

    Fed Interest Rate Decision

Callaway’s debt, including Japan ABL borrowing priced off TIBOR, makes the Fed’s decision on the cost of borrowing relevant because higher rates can raise interest paid and leave less cash for its golf and apparel business.
