Company

Company overview

Beyond Meat uses plant ingredients and proprietary processes to reproduce the taste and texture of beef, pork and poultry. Retailers and foodservice operators buy its products to sell to shoppers or serve in meals, with retail supplying most revenue. Most sales pass through distributors that buy, store and deliver the products; some customers buy directly and handle their own distribution. Its main markets are the United States, the EU and Canada, and Beyond Burger accounts for a large share of sales.

The business depends on consumers choosing plant-based meat and retailers and restaurants continuing to stock it. Demand has weakened as consumers turn to cheaper conventional meat and private-label products. DOT Foods is a significant distributor, and distributors provide no minimum purchase commitments. Beyond Meat also depends heavily on Roquette Frères for pea protein, a main ingredient in many products, with few alternative suppliers.

Rules and court orders limit how it can describe its products. In France, a court ordered it to stop describing them as “meat” and to stop communications equating them with meat or making subjective comparisons. Beyond Meat withdrew its appeal, though the court did not require changes to its brand or product names.

Beyond Meat’s results hinge on demand for plant-based meat against privately held rival Impossible Foods, while its main pea-protein ingredient depends substantially on Roquette Frères.

  • Conagra’s Gardein plant-based meats compete directly with Beyond Meat for grocery shoppers and shelf space.

  • Nomad Foods sells meat substitutes through European frozen-food brands, competing with Beyond Meat for shoppers and retail shelf space in Europe. Watch its meat-substitute business rather than overall sales: fish is its largest revenue contributor, while Beyond Meat reported lower EU burger, ground beef and dinner sausage sales in 2025.

  • Tyson Foods sells beef, pork and chicken to buyers who can choose conventional meat instead of Beyond Meat’s plant-based versions. Watch the price gap: Beyond Meat says its premium prices can push consumers toward cheaper animal meat.

  • Hormel Foods’ branded animal-protein products compete with Beyond Meat’s plant-based substitutes for retail purchases and places on foodservice menus. Its SPAM, Jennie-O and Applegate products are alternatives to watch when assessing which meat products shoppers and foodservice buyers choose.

  • Oatly and Beyond Meat both need consumers to choose plant-based alternatives in shops and foodservice outlets: Oatly sells oat drinks and dairy alternatives, while Beyond Meat sells meat substitutes. Watch Oatly’s foodservice-to-retail demand: it says trying its products in foodservice can build demand in shops.
