Company

Company overview

Bentley Systems serves engineering and construction firms and the owners and operators of infrastructure assets. Customers use its modeling and simulation applications to plan and design projects, coordinate construction teams, and manage assets after they enter service. Bentley Infrastructure Cloud connects engineering information and collaboration across these stages. Engineering and construction firms provide slightly more revenue than asset owners and operators.

Subscriptions generate most revenue. Larger organizations can use Enterprise 365 (E365) to access the software portfolio and pay mainly according to daily usage. Other customers subscribe to specific products, or buy permanent licenses and pay annually for SELECT upgrades and support. Permanent license sales and services contribute a smaller share. Most growth comes from existing customers spending more on subscriptions for products they already use, making continued usage and renewals central to the business.

Public works and utilities account for the largest share of its sector-attributable recurring business, so infrastructure spending matters to demand. No single customer supplies a material share of revenue, but Microsoft Azure is its principal cloud-services supplier. Data-protection and localization rules can limit where Bentley stores and processes customer data, while export controls and sanctions restrict delivery to certain locations and customers.

Bentley Systems’ results hinge on infrastructure engineering software adoption, with Hexagon and Schneider Electric’s AVEVA also worth watching as rivals across utilities, resources and industrial asset workflows.

  • Autodesk competes with Bentley Systems for architecture, engineering and construction customers’ spending on design, engineering and project collaboration software. Adoption of Autodesk’s Revit and BIM Collaborate Pro is worth watching for demand and competition among these shared customers.

  • Trimble competes with Bentley Systems to sell engineers, contractors and asset owners software for modeling, design and construction across infrastructure and buildings. Its Architects, Engineers, Construction, and Owners business is the part to watch for spending by these shared customers, rather than its transportation and logistics business.

  • Procore Technologies overlaps with Bentley Systems in selling construction organizations software to coordinate and carry out projects, while Bentley also covers engineering design and asset operations. Watch Procore’s subscriptions for project management, quality and safety software for signs of construction customers’ adoption of digital workflows.
