Company

Company overview

BrenX serves factories and other sites that need heat for their operations. Its bGen systems use crushed rock to store heat supplied by electricity or other heat sources, then release it when needed as steam, hot air or other usable heat. Most completed projects have involved selling and installing systems that customers own, with warranty and maintenance included in the sale package.

The company is also developing an energy-as-a-service model: it installs, operates and maintains systems, while customers pay for the energy or energy service rather than buy the equipment. Ownership arrangements vary. For systems being developed for Tempo Beverages and Wolfson Medical Center, Baran Energy is to pay BrenX at construction and commissioning milestones and take ownership after commissioning; BrenX retains the technology rights and provides paid operations and maintenance.

Commercialization remains at an early stage, with little revenue so far and product revenue concentrated in a single European customer. Continued operations and project development depend on outside financing. Customer demand and project economics also depend on electricity costs relative to natural gas and other fuels.

Israeli development grants restrict where some supported products can be manufactured and require prior approval for certain transfers of technology or related rights. These rules allow exports from Israel but can constrain overseas manufacturing and technology transactions.

BrenX’s results hinge on funding and commercial adoption of industrial thermal storage, with Antora, Energy Nest, KraftBlock, Kyoto and Rondo among its identified direct rivals to watch.

  • Babcock & Wilcox sells boilers and steam-generation systems to industrial and utility buyers whose heat needs BrenX targets with thermal-storage equipment, tying both businesses to those customers’ spending on heat supply. Watch Babcock & Wilcox’s sales of complete steam-generation systems to medium and heavy industrial customers for signs of investment in the heat applications BrenX seeks to serve.

EIA Crude Oil Stocks Change (Oct/16)

BRENX sells bGen thermal-storage systems and, through its energy-supply service, sells heat to customers; US crude-oil and fuel stocks indicate whether fossil-fuel supply is loosening or tightening, which can change the price comparison behind customers’ adoption decisions and the economics of energy BRENX sells.

Babcock & Wilcox’s report will show whether industrial customers are still buying steam systems, a sign of whether spending on the heat applications BrenX targets could also support demand for its thermal-storage equipment.
