Company

Company overview

Bar Harbor Bankshares is a bank holding company serving businesses and individuals in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont through Bar Harbor Bank & Trust. The bank gathers local deposits to fund lending and securities investments. Borrowers pay interest on loans, which the bank generally keeps rather than sells. Commercial real estate accounts for the largest share of lending, followed by residential real estate. Interest income after deposit and borrowing costs supplies most of the company’s revenue.

The company also earns fees for managing clients’ wealth and handling banking transactions. Bar Harbor Wealth Management provides investment management and trust and estate administration, generally charging clients according to the market value of their accounts. Deposit customers pay account and service fees, while merchants pay fees when customers use the bank’s debit cards.

The business depends on retaining deposits at costs that leave room for earnings from loans and securities. Its lending is closely tied to local property markets and borrowers’ ability to repay. Banking capital and liquidity requirements constrain how much it can lend and invest, and regulators can restrict payments from the bank to the holding company.
