Company

Company overview

Business First Bancshares provides banking services through its wholly owned subsidiary, b1BANK, in Louisiana, Dallas–Fort Worth and Houston. It focuses on small-to-midsized businesses, their owners and employees, and professionals. Borrowers use its loans to fund day-to-day operations, expansion and property projects; the bank also lends to individuals for homes and other personal needs.

Customer deposits provide most of the money the bank lends, supplemented by borrowings. Borrowers pay interest, and the bank pays interest on deposits and borrowed funds. The difference, together with interest earned on securities, drives most of its earnings. Customers also pay account-service and loan fees.

The business depends on retaining deposits at manageable costs and on borrowers’ ability to repay. Most lending is concentrated in its local markets, and real estate backs most loans, tying repayment and collateral values to those regional economies and property markets. Banking rules require capital and restrict activities and payments from b1BANK to the parent company, which relies principally on those bank dividends to meet its own expenses and obligations.

  • First Horizon competes with b1BANK for commercial loans and deposits in Louisiana and Texas, so its regional business-banking results offer a read on the customers both banks seek.

  • Texas Capital Bancshares, Inc. competes with b1BANK for commercial borrowers, entrepreneurs and professionals in Dallas–Fort Worth and Houston. Watch its success in winning those banking relationships: it pitches Texas-based decision-making against banks controlled from outside the state.

  • Prosperity Bancshares, through Prosperity Bank, competes with b1BANK in Texas to hold businesses’ deposits and lend for commercial property and day-to-day funding needs. Its business deposits, commercial real estate loans and working-capital lending are the areas to watch for competition facing b1BANK.

  • First Financial Bankshares Inc competes with b1BANK for business loans, deposits and wealth-management clients in overlapping Texas markets. Its trust offices in Fort Worth and Houston put its wealth business in cities where b1BANK also serves clients.

  • Trustmark Corp competes with b1BANK for banking and wealth-management clients in Houston, tying both to the city’s borrowers and deposits. Watch Trustmark’s Houston business rather than treating its broader banking and wealth results as a purely local signal.

  • Home BancShares, Inc., through Centennial Bank, competes with b1BANK to lend to Texas businesses and real estate borrowers, including through Centennial’s Dallas commercial lending platform.

  • ServisFirst Bancshares Inc. offers a comparison for b1BANK’s business-loan and deposit growth: both rely on close relationships with commercial customers and lean office networks rather than extensive branches.

  • First Business Financial Services, Inc. offers a comparison for b1BANK’s focus on lending to smaller businesses and serving their owners through close client relationships, without an extensive retail branch network. Its business lending and ability to gather deposits through those relationships are useful checks on that model.
