Brown-Forman owns brands including Jack Daniel’s, Woodford Reserve and Old Forester, and distills, bottles and markets their drinks. Whiskey accounts for most revenue, alongside ready-to-drink cocktails, tequila and other spirits. The Jack Daniel’s family is its primary revenue driver, making continued consumer demand for that brand central to the business.
Distributors, retailers, wholesalers and government alcohol sellers pay Brown-Forman for its products, depending on the market. In the United States, spirits manufacturers generally cannot sell directly to consumers, so the company sells to distributors or state governments that supply retailers. Abroad, it uses both its own distribution companies and outside partners. The United States is its largest individual market, but sales outside the country collectively provide most revenue.
Whiskey and some other spirits need years of aging before sale. Brown-Forman therefore has to decide how much to produce well before knowing actual demand, tying up money in maturing inventory and making future supply depend on earlier production decisions.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
Brown-Forman’s results depend chiefly on global premium whiskey demand, making Suntory Global Spirits and Pernod Ricard important rivals to watch even though neither appears on this list.
Diageo competes worldwide with Brown-Forman for consumers buying premium branded whiskey, tequila and other spirits. Its sales of Johnnie Walker and Crown Royal whiskey and Don Julio tequila offer a comparison for demand facing Brown-Forman’s whiskey and tequila brands.
MGP Ingredients Inc competes with Brown-Forman through American whiskey brands sold to distributors and state-run alcohol sellers. Its business distilling whiskey for sale in bulk also offers a window into the aged-whiskey inventory cycle that affects Brown-Forman.
Constellation Brands competes with Brown-Forman’s whiskey and tequila through High West and Mi CAMPO, selling its drinks mainly through U.S. wholesalers. Its much larger beer business, including Modelo Especial and Corona Extra, is more useful for watching U.S. alcohol spending than for comparing whiskey demand directly.
Boston Beer competes for U.S. drinking occasions with Brown-Forman’s Jack Daniel’s ready-to-drink products through Sun Cruiser, Truly and flavored malt drinks, selling mainly to wholesalers that supply retailers. Watch Sun Cruiser and Truly sales for a comparison with demand for Jack Daniel’s ready-to-drink products, rather than its bottled whiskey.
Brown-Forman buys glass containers from O-I Glass to package its spirits, making O-I a direct supplier rather than a rival for drinkers. O-I’s glass-container production news is the relevant thing to watch for Brown-Forman’s bottle supply.

Boston Beer’s report will show demand for drinks such as Sun Cruiser and Truly, offering a read on the drinking occasions its products share with Brown-Forman’s Jack Daniel’s ready-to-drink line.
Watch sales of Sun Cruiser, Truly and flavored malt drinks. Strong sales would show consumers are still buying these packaged drinks, supporting the occasions Brown-Forman’s Jack Daniel’s ready-to-drink products also serve; weakness would point to softer demand in those shared drinking occasions.
Fed Interest Rate Decision
The Fed’s decision signals the direction of economy-wide borrowing costs, which can change what Brown-Forman pays to fund short-term operating needs with commercial paper and to refinance debt.

If it comes in above expectations
If rates rise, Brown-Forman may pay more on commercial paper and other borrowing as it rolls over or refinances debt, leaving less operating cash after interest costs.
If it comes in below expectations
If rates fall, Brown-Forman may pay less to renew commercial paper or refinance debt, reducing interest costs and leaving more cash for operations.

Brown-Forman’s report will show whether whiskey and ready-to-drink sales growth is turning into more operating profit or being absorbed by costs and expenses.
Read sales, gross margin and operating income together. Sales growth with a firm gross margin and rising operating income would show that demand and lower costs are generating enough gross profit to cover operating expenses. If sales grow but operating income stalls or falls, expenses are still absorbing the gross-profit gains, and growth is not translating into stronger operating returns.
