Birchtech Corp.’s main customers are U.S. coal-fired power plants that need to control mercury emissions. It tailors systems and materials to individual generating units using its patented SEA® process. Plants buy materials that capture mercury from exhaust gases, and these product sales provide most of the company’s revenue. Birchtech also earns patent-license fees, seeking to turn alleged unauthorized users of its process into paying licensees or product customers.
The business depends on how much coal its customers burn and on environmental rules requiring emissions control. Plant closures shrink its market, while changes in electricity demand, competing energy sources and plant downtime affect material purchases. A few customers account for a large share of revenue.
Birchtech is also developing a drinking-water treatment business, initially targeting municipalities with limited resources and engineering expertise. It plans to supply activated carbon that removes contaminants, alongside testing and consulting. Its Pennsylvania and North Dakota Design Centers support development and evaluate used carbon restored for reuse. This remains a developing business rather than an established major revenue source.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
Birchtech’s results depend chiefly on coal-plant operation and mercury-control supply and licensing, with important rivals Arq, Norit Activated Carbon and Calgon Carbon absent from this list.
Ecolab’s Nalco Water competes with Birchtech to supply mercury-capture and water-treatment solutions, but those markets account for only part of Ecolab’s broader business serving customers such as food and healthcare companies. For Birchtech holders, news about Ecolab’s water-treatment business is more relevant than its overall sales of water, hygiene and infection-prevention services.
Ecolab, Inc. earningsECL
Ecolab’s report will show demand in its water-treatment business, a reference point for the market Birchtech is entering.
Focus on Ecolab’s water-treatment business, not its overall sales. Stronger activity would indicate firmer customer demand for treatment solutions, a supportive signal for Birchtech’s developing water business; weaker activity would point to a less supportive market, but would not establish Birchtech’s own sales.

Birchtech’s report will show whether coal plants’ purchases of its mercury-capture materials can support revenue beyond patent-license fees.
Read material sales alongside license revenue. A recovery in material sales with license revenue still present would show that coal-plant product demand and fees both support revenue. Weak material sales with revenue relying mainly on license fees would show greater dependence on agreements that may not recur, rather than sustained product demand.
Industrial Production MoM (Oct)
Industrial production tracks output from factories, mines and utilities; stronger coal-plant activity can support Birchtech’s mercury-capture product sales, while weaker activity can reduce them.
If output is strong, utility customers’ coal-plant activity may support demand for Birchtech’s mercury-capture products; if weak, lower activity may reduce that demand.
