Company

Company overview

American Water Works supplies drinking water and handles wastewater through its U.S. utility subsidiaries. These regulated utilities bring in nearly all its revenue, with household water bills the largest source and commercial customers next. Water service contributes far more revenue than wastewater service. A smaller business, Military Services Group, receives payments under long-term U.S. government contracts to operate and maintain water and wastewater systems on military installations.

The company continually replaces pipes and upgrades treatment facilities. To recover those investments and operating costs and earn a return, it seeks approval from state utility regulators to adjust customer rates. Regulators control when and how much it can recover; spending does not automatically lead to higher rates. Its operations must also meet water-quality and environmental requirements. In Monterey, California, its subsidiary Cal Am remains subject to orders limiting Carmel River withdrawals and prohibiting new connections and certain increases in water use until a permanent replacement supply is accepted by the state water board.

  • Essential Utilities’ Aqua businesses compete with American Water to buy water systems serving paying utility customers, but the proposed merger would turn each Essential share into 0.305 American Water shares. Watch state utility approvals: conditions such as required asset sales could reduce the merger’s benefits or prevent completion.

  • American States Water competes with American Water for utility acquisitions and government-paid military water-service contracts; both also sell water to customers through regulated California utilities. Its military contract wins are worth watching as evidence of the competition facing American Water’s military services business.

  • California Water Service competes with American Water to acquire utilities, while both sell water to customers under California regulation. Watch its California water-rate approvals for a comparison of how infrastructure spending reaches customer bills, rather than treating it as a rival for existing customers.

  • H2O America shares American Water’s infrastructure-led growth model: both earn mainly from customers of water utilities authorized to operate in designated areas. Its water utility business offers a comparison for the spending and customer-rate recovery that underpin American Water’s growth.

  • Middlesex Water and American Water both sell water through regulated New Jersey systems, so state rate decisions and infrastructure costs matter to both. Watch Middlesex’s rate approvals for its New Jersey system, which supplied approximately 67% of its consolidated operating revenue in 2025, as a comparison for American Water’s cost recovery in the state.

  • York Water shares American Water’s exposure to Pennsylvania utility approvals: both charge customers for regulated water and wastewater services there. Watch approvals for York’s new service areas and utility purchases for a comparison of the regulatory path facing American Water’s expansion in the state.

  • Artesian Resources shares American Water’s model of serving residential and commercial customers through franchised Mid-Atlantic water and wastewater utilities. Its Delaware water business is the clearest comparison: Artesian Water generated approximately 80.5% of consolidated operating revenue in 2025.
