Company

Company overview

Most of American Superconductor’s revenue comes from its Grid business, where utilities, industrial facilities and energy-project developers buy equipment to move electricity, stabilize voltage and connect generation to the grid. Its D-VAR systems control voltage and power flow, while Comtrafo supplies power and distribution transformers. Grid-planning work identifies problems and can lead to equipment sales; product sales, rather than services, account for most company revenue. Fuji Bridex is a significant Grid customer.

Grid also sells ship-protection systems to the U.S. and Royal Canadian navies. These use high-temperature superconductors to reduce a ship’s magnetic signature, making it harder for magnetic sensors and mines to detect. This business depends on government funding, and the governments can terminate contracts for convenience.

The smaller Wind business uses its Windtec Solutions brand to license turbine designs to manufacturers, which pay upfront fees and sometimes royalties, then buy the electrical control systems needed to operate those turbines. American Superconductor typically supplies these components exclusively for its own designs. Wind revenue depends heavily on Inox Wind Limited and on manufacturers selling and delivering turbines based on the licensed designs.

The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.

AMSC’s results hinge mainly on grid and industrial electrical investment, but watch Inox Wind too: it accounts for 15% of total revenue and nearly all Wind-segment revenue.

  • Espey Mfg. & Electronics Corp competes with AMSC to sell custom power supplies and transformers for military and rugged industrial use; AMSC explicitly names it as a rival. Watch Espey’s magnetics and power-supply sales for a view of the markets where they overlap.

  • Powell Industries Inc and AMSC both depend on electrical investment by utilities and energy facilities: Powell sells equipment that distributes and controls electricity, while AMSC sells transformers, power-conversion and power-quality systems. Powell’s utility, oil-and-gas and petrochemical revenue offers a read on spending in those shared markets.

  • Quanta Services and AMSC share exposure to utility grid expansion and upgrades: utilities pay Quanta to build and improve infrastructure, while AMSC sells systems that connect generation to the grid, control voltage and transform power. Watch Quanta’s electric-utility construction and upgrade work for signs of spending on these grid needs.

  • MYR Group and AMSC depend on utility investment in networks and substations: MYR earns construction fees, while AMSC sells transformers, voltage-control equipment and systems that improve those networks. MYR’s transmission and distribution business is the part to watch, serving utilities and power generators in the United States and Ontario, Canada.

  • Preformed Line Products and AMSC both sell into utility network investment: Preformed supplies hardware that supports, protects and connects wires, while AMSC supplies equipment that improves grid capacity and power quality. Its energy-product revenue is the relevant line to watch, rather than its telecommunications products.
