Company

Company overview

ADT Inc. equips U.S. homes and small businesses with alarm systems, cameras and connected-home controls, then provides around-the-clock professional monitoring. Customers can choose professional installation or self-installation. The ADT+ app lets them control supported systems remotely, receive alerts and view live video. Customers pay for equipment and installation, but recurring monitoring and related services supply most of ADT’s revenue, typically under multi-year contracts signed when systems are installed.

ADT spends heavily upfront to acquire and equip subscribers, then recovers those costs through installation fees and service payments over subsequent years. Retaining paying customers is therefore central to the business. It also buys monitoring accounts from independent authorized dealers that sell and install systems; a significant share of third-party-generated accounts comes from a smaller group of sellers.

Selling, installing and monitoring security systems requires licenses in most states where ADT operates, and some jurisdictions also require permits and compliance with fire and building codes. A longstanding trademark agreement bars ADT from using its core ADT marks outside the United States and Canada.

ADT’s results hinge on keeping recurring monitoring subscribers amid competition from Vivint, SimpliSafe and Brinks Home, none of which appears in this list.

  • Arlo Technologies, Inc. competes for the households ADT wants to reach with self-installed security, selling connected cameras and paid security subscriptions. Watch Arlo’s paid-subscription business for signs of competition for these households’ recurring security spending.

  • Amazon’s Ring gives households an alternative to ADT through self-installed security devices, self-monitoring and optional professional monitoring. Watch Ring’s monitoring prices and features: cheaper or more capable alternatives can pressure ADT’s subscription prices and customer retention.

  • Alphabet’s Google supplies connected devices that ADT integrates into ADT+, making Google a product supplier for ADT’s customer-facing security and smart-home platform. Watch news about those device integrations as ADT builds ADT+ around both professionally installed and self-installed systems.
