Company

Company overview

AllianceBernstein Holding L.P. holds a limited partnership interest in the investment manager AllianceBernstein (AB). Its cash comes entirely from distributions by AB, which it passes on to its own unitholders after taxes.

AB manages money for institutions, individual investors and wealthy families. Retail investors access its funds and managed accounts through banks, brokers and financial advisers; this business supplies most of AB’s revenue. Private wealth management is the next-largest source, followed by institutional services. AB earns mainly fees based on the assets it manages, while retail fund distribution also brings in substantial revenue.

Income depends on clients keeping money with AB, the value of those investments and the fee rates of the products they choose. Investment performance helps attract and retain assets, but clients can generally end agreements on short notice. The Japan-domiciled AllianceBernstein U.S. Growth Stock fund supplies a substantial share of revenue. Parent company EQH and its subsidiaries are AB’s largest client and also provide capital for new products, although they contribute a relatively small share of total revenue.

To preserve its partnership tax status, Holding cannot enter a substantial new business unrelated to AB’s historical activities, either directly or through AB.

  • Equitable Holdings, Inc. is AllianceBernstein’s parent and largest paying client, while AllianceBernstein’s investment-management earnings feed directly into Equitable’s results. Watch the mainly fixed-income assets Equitable entrusts to AllianceBernstein: its affiliates accounted for about 16% of total managed assets at December 31, 2025, but about 4% of net revenues in 2025.

  • Franklin Templeton competes with AllianceBernstein for clients’ investment assets worldwide, including contracts to manage investments inside other firms’ funds; both charge fees largely tied to the assets they manage. Changes in Franklin’s managed assets and their mix offer a comparison for AllianceBernstein’s management-fee revenue.

  • Invesco and AllianceBernstein compete for retail and institutional clients buying equity, fixed-income and alternative investment strategies worldwide. Watch Invesco’s mix of client assets: it earns higher fees on actively managed equity and alternative products than on fixed income and ETFs, making that mix a useful comparison for AllianceBernstein’s asset-based fees.

  • T. Rowe Price competes with AllianceBernstein for investors paying for research-led active funds, management of other firms’ funds and individually managed institutional accounts. Its active-fund investment results are a useful comparison for AllianceBernstein’s ability to win and retain client assets through investment performance.

  • ARTISAN PARTNERS ASSET MANAGEMENT INC. competes with AllianceBernstein for clients’ global active equity and income investments, with both relying on distinctive research to win business. Watch Artisan’s International Value and Global Value strategies, its largest by managed assets, but distinguish weak demand from its deliberate limits on accepting more client money.

  • Virtus Investment Partners and AllianceBernstein both earn fees tied to the money individual and institutional clients place in funds and separately managed accounts. Virtus’s retail separate-account and institutional-account assets provide a concrete comparison for demand in two of AllianceBernstein’s client channels.

  • Affiliated Managers Group’s investment firms compete with AllianceBernstein for clients’ equity, fixed-income, multi-asset and alternative investments through funds and individually managed accounts. Watch their equity and multi-asset/fixed-income assets for a closer comparison with AllianceBernstein than AMG’s private-market business.

  • BlackRock competes with AllianceBernstein for institutional and retail investment assets, charging asset-based management fees while its passive products also pressure AllianceBernstein’s fees. Watch demand for BlackRock’s index strategies as a comparison for AllianceBernstein’s ability to sell active management to investors who may prefer passive investing.

  • Federated Hermes competes with AllianceBernstein for clients’ investment assets and mainly earns advisory fees based on those assets, but its business is much more concentrated in money markets. Its institutional cash business makes it a less direct comparison for AllianceBernstein: money-market assets accounted for $682.6 billion of its $902.6 billion managed at December 31, 2025.

  • Acadian Asset Management Inc. competes with AllianceBernstein for institutional clients’ investment mandates, using data-driven research to choose investments and build portfolios. Its institutional investment performance offers a comparison for AllianceBernstein’s ability to win assets through its own fundamental and quantitative research.

  • Ameriprise Financial competes with AllianceBernstein in asset management and in managing wealth clients’ accounts for fees based on account assets. Watch its wealth clients’ managed-account assets for a comparison with AllianceBernstein’s Private Wealth business, which generated about 28% of net revenues in 2025.

  • Cohen & Steers Inc. competes with AllianceBernstein for wealth and institutional clients buying managed funds and accounts, but specializes in real assets. Keep its real-estate exposure in mind when comparing results: real estate securities strategies represented about 63.8% of its managed assets at December 31, 2025.

  • Morgan Stanley competes with AllianceBernstein in managing investments and wealth for individual and institutional clients, but its securities business adds other drivers to group results. Its Wealth Management and Investment Management results are therefore closer comparisons for AllianceBernstein than its overall earnings.

  • UBS Group’s global asset-management business directly competes with AllianceBernstein to manage clients’ investments, but its broader banking operations make group earnings a less direct comparison. Watch UBS Asset Management rather than the whole bank for a read on competition for investment assets.

  • Lazard’s asset-management business competes with AllianceBernstein for clients’ investment mandates, while its separate financial-advisory business depends on winning individual deal-related engagements. Its Asset Management results are the cleaner comparison for AllianceBernstein; advisory revenue also reflects a deal cycle AllianceBernstein does not share through this tie.
