Company

Company overview

ATA Creativity Global serves mainly high-school and undergraduate students applying to overseas art programs under its ACG brand. Teachers guide students in developing the portfolios required for admission, primarily through in-person, individual classes at training centers in China. Students pay for programs based on training hours or a specified set of portfolio projects, and most offerings require advance payment. Portfolio training generates most revenue; the company also charges for overseas study counseling and research-based learning, including workshops and educational travel.

The business depends on attracting students willing to pay its course fees, retaining qualified art teachers and adapting instruction to changing overseas schools’ portfolio requirements. Demand also depends on Chinese students’ willingness and ability to study abroad.

Chinese education rules constrain how the centers may operate and collect fees. The company believes its centers do not currently need private-school permits or non-academic tutoring approvals, and they have not obtained them. If regulators require those authorizations, centers could face fee repayments or closure; applicable tutoring rules could also limit advance fee collection.

ATA Creativity Global’s results depend chiefly on Chinese students paying for portfolios to apply to overseas art schools—a narrower market than the diversified education businesses listed here.

  • New Oriental competes for ATA Creativity Global’s prospective students by offering overseas-study counselling and exam preparation, while ATA focuses on preparing students for art-school admission. New Oriental’s overseas-study services are the part to watch for this overlap, rather than its broader education and retail businesses.

  • Gaotu competes for Chinese students who pay ATA Creativity Global for overseas art-study counselling, offering overseas-study application services and exam courses including IELTS and TOEFL. Demand for Gaotu’s overseas-study application and exam services is more relevant to ATA than demand for its broader tutoring courses.
