Elevance Health provides health insurance and health services. Insurers collect premiums and pay medical claims, so revenue alone does not show profitability. Recent US individual-market enrollment declines do not automatically mean lower insurance profits, or establish Elevance's results across its businesses. This report brings membership, premium pricing and medical costs together to test the economics of providing coverage.[1]
Watch membership by insurance business and the share of premiums spent on medical claims. Premiums keeping pace with care costs and a stable membership mix would support health-insurer profit expectations; claims growing faster than premiums would sharpen scrutiny of peers' pricing and cost control. Hospitals and insurers need not benefit together: more care can increase provider revenue while raising insurers' claims. Distinguish customers switching coverage from becoming uninsured; the latter more directly raises providers' collection risk.[1]
