Research publishing provides most of John Wiley & Sons’ revenue. Universities, research libraries and corporations pay for access to journals, mainly through Wiley Online Library, with subscription payments generally collected in advance. Library consortia can also buy multiyear agreements that combine reading access with rights for their researchers to publish openly. For other open-access articles, authors or research funders typically pay a publishing charge so readers can access the accepted article free of charge. Wiley also licenses content for uses including AI training.
Its smaller Learning business sells print and digital books, including For Dummies, and course materials to students, researchers and professionals. Platforms such as WileyPLUS deliver digital courseware, while businesses pay for employee assessment and development tools such as Everything DiSC.
The publishing business depends on authors supplying research and societies maintaining publishing relationships. A substantial share of journal-subscription revenue comes from rights owned by societies and other partners, which Wiley publishes under long-term contracts or shares ownership of. Research funding and institutional budgets support both access purchases and publication fees. Government and funder requirements to make research freely available limit how long some articles can remain behind a paywall, making the balance between subscription payments and open-access publishing fees important to the business.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
Wiley’s largest business hinges on research-library budgets and open-access publishing, where RELX is an important rival missing from this list.
Pearson competes with Wiley to sell higher-education courseware, learning content and assessments to students, instructors and employers. Its higher-education and employer-learning results are the parts to watch for competition facing Wiley’s Learning business.
RESEARCH SOLUTIONS INC overlaps with Wiley by selling scientific articles individually to corporate, academic and government researchers, who can also pay Wiley for access to articles outside their subscriptions. Watch its article-transaction revenue rather than its research-platform subscription revenue for the closer comparison with Wiley’s Article Select and PayPerView offerings.
Barnes & Noble Education, Inc buys Wiley textbooks for campus stores and sells digital course materials to the same college students Wiley serves, making it both a customer and a window on course-material spending. Watch its print and digital course-material sales, rather than campus merchandise; unsold textbooks can be returned to publishers for full credit.

Research Solutions' report will show whether researchers still pay individually for articles outside subscriptions, the same need Wiley serves through its article-access offerings.
Watch Research Solutions' article-transaction revenue, not its research-platform subscriptions. Growth would show researchers still pay for articles outside subscriptions, supporting demand for Wiley's Article Select and PayPerView; a decline would point to weakening demand for one-off article purchases.

Wiley's report will show whether growth in research publishing can keep offsetting weaker sales of academic and professional learning products.
Compare revenue growth in Research with Learning. Research growth alongside a narrowing Learning decline would show journal and open-access publishing helping carry the business; Research growth with continued Learning contraction would mean Wiley is relying more heavily on research publishing while its learning products keep losing sales.
