Company

Company overview

Vantage Corp helps oil companies and commodity traders find ships to carry their cargoes, matches them with shipowners, and negotiates charter contracts. It also coordinates shipments, documentation, claims and settlement. Its work centers on tankers carrying crude oil, petroleum products and petrochemicals. Shipowners generally pay it a fixed commission per contract or a share of the underlying transaction value. Freight commissions provide most revenue; commissions on charters that hire vessels for a period are the next-largest source.

The business depends on the volume and value of shipping deals, which move with commodity trade, freight rates and vessel availability. Customers generally negotiate deal by deal rather than commit to continued business, making experienced brokers and their relationships important. No single customer supplies a dominant share of revenue. Its mainland China operations must maintain required licenses and approvals, and Chinese currency and remittance controls can limit transfers of cash to the offshore parent.

Vantage Corp’s results hinge on tanker freight rates and charter transaction volumes, making shipbroking rivals Clarksons Plc and Simpson Spence Young—not Simpson Manufacturing—more relevant comparisons than the supplied companies.
