Company

Company overview

Most of Swvl Holdings Corp’s revenue comes from Swvl Business, which serves companies, schools, municipalities and other organizations running transportation programs. For customers without fleets, Swvl arranges dedicated routes using vehicles and drivers on its network. Customers typically pay per route rather than per passenger, so payments do not depend on filling seats. Organizations with their own fleets pay for software to manage passengers, schedules and billing, with routing and fleet-management tools available in higher service tiers.

Swvl also earns fares from individuals who book seats through its mobile app on fixed or semi-fixed routes within and between cities. This is the smaller revenue stream. Swvl does not own or operate the vehicles; its technology predicts demand, adjusts routes and sets prices to increase vehicle use.

The business depends on retaining corporate contracts and having enough suitable drivers to deliver the agreed services. Corporate contracts generally renew annually, but customers can terminate, renegotiate or decline to renew them. Swvl says it lacks some required registrations and licenses in certain jurisdictions, which could restrict or halt operations. In Egypt, it has also committed not to price consumer rides below specified profitability benchmarks.

Swvl’s results depend mainly on enterprise transportation contracts in Egypt and its expanding Gulf markets; Via, Flixbus and Shuttl offer competing equivalent services but are absent from this list.

  • Uber competes with Swvl for riders paying for app-booked bus journeys and businesses paying for employee transportation, including in Egypt. Uber’s shuttle and corporate-transport offerings are the services to watch for competition with Swvl’s bus routes and business contracts.
