Company overview

SMJ International Holdings Inc. supplies carpets and vinyl flooring for offices and other commercial and institutional spaces through its Singapore operating subsidiary, SMJ Furnishings (S) Pte. Ltd. Most customers are dealers, importers and installation companies that buy in bulk and resell to end users. It also sells directly to developers, design and renovation firms, and commercial-space owners or tenants. Singapore and overseas markets, mainly in Asia, each contribute roughly half of revenue.

SMJ specifies the products’ designs and has third-party manufacturers in China and Thailand make them under its own brand. It orders ahead of expected demand and holds varied stock in Singapore so customers can buy without waiting for production. This model depends on matching inventory to demand and maintaining supply from manufacturers with whom it generally has no long-term or exclusive agreements.

Sales depend on commercial construction, renovation budgets and winning new projects, including through architects’ and designers’ referrals. The two largest customers together provide a substantial share of revenue, but neither has a long-term agreement; orders vary with their projects and completion timing. Its Singapore Building and Construction Authority registration also limits the size of public-sector contracts it can tender for, and retaining that registration requires an awarded-project track record.
