Company

Company overview

Rekor Systems helps transportation departments and law-enforcement agencies understand roadway activity and identify vehicles. Its main market is U.S. state and local government, though it also serves commercial customers. Rekor One combines data from roadway sensors, cameras and other sources for traffic analysis and decision-making. Its Scout platform reads license plates and recognizes vehicles, providing alerts and investigative tools.

Customers pay for roadway data aggregation, traffic management and software licensing, which account for most revenue. These offerings combine software and hardware with installation, engineering, support and maintenance. Rekor sells software and data subscriptions, with or without equipment, as well as perpetual software licenses; it aims to make recurring subscriptions the main source of future revenue.

Winning government business often involves competitive proposals and grant applications. Continued revenue depends on customers renewing subscriptions and contracts, and many large government contracts can be ended on short notice without cause. Privacy and data-security laws also govern how Rekor handles personal information and transfers data across borders.

Rekor’s results hinge on government spending on roadway intelligence and public safety, with privately held Flock Safety an important license-plate-recognition rival missing from this list.

  • Axon Enterprise competes with Rekor for law-enforcement agencies’ purchases of fixed and semi-fixed systems that automatically read vehicle license plates. Watch Axon’s license-plate-recognition offerings within its connected hardware and software suite: those are where it directly contests Rekor’s police business.

  • Motorola Solutions competes with Rekor to sell technology that identifies vehicles by reading license plates within public-safety systems. Its offering connects communications, video, access control and analytics, so watch its license-plate-recognition business rather than treating all of its safety-and-security sales as competition for Rekor.

  • SoundThinking puts Rekor technology into PlateRanger and sells public-safety subscriptions to cities that also buy Rekor’s law-enforcement tools, tying both companies to municipal police-technology spending. Watch PlateRanger adoption specifically: it uses Rekor technology, unlike SoundThinking’s separate gunshot-detection offering.
