Perma-Pipe International Holdings, Inc. supplies pipes that keep heating and cooling fluids at the required temperature and contain chemicals, petroleum and other fluids. It also insulates and coats pipelines to protect them from heat loss and corrosion. Customers pay it to engineer and manufacture systems fitted to individual projects; this work provides most of its revenue. It sells leak-detection equipment alongside those systems or separately.
The company bills customers at agreed project milestones or when goods ship. It generally makes systems to job-site dimensions, while unaffiliated contractors handle trenching for underground installations. Revenue therefore depends on the timing of individual project orders and progress, rather than a steady stream of repeat purchases.
Most sales come from customers outside the United States, with substantial business in the Gulf Cooperation Council countries. One customer contributes a notable share of sales and a larger share of outstanding customer payments. The business also depends on obtaining steel and other materials and recovering cost increases through customer pricing.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
Perma-Pipe's results hinge on winning and delivering individual district-heating, cooling and energy-pipeline projects, particularly in the Middle East, Canada and the United States, rather than on the businesses of the supplied candidates.
EIA Crude Oil Stocks Change (Oct/16)
The EIA weekly stocks report tracks how much crude oil and gasoline are held in US inventories; Perma-Pipe says oil and gas prices can affect demand for its specialty piping, so the price signal can change project orders and the revenue its systems generate.
A stock draw points to tighter US crude and fuel supply and may support oil and gas prices, which could help demand for Perma-Pipe's piping products; a build points to looser supply and may weaken that demand.
Fed Interest Rate Decision
Fed decisions track the cost of borrowing in the US economy; for Perma-Pipe, whose revolving facilities carry substantial borrowings, that can change the interest it pays when debt reprices or it borrows anew.

If it comes in above expectations
Higher-than-expected policy rates could raise costs on Perma-Pipe's borrowings as facilities reprice or new borrowing is needed, leaving less of its project revenue to cover other costs and earnings.
If it comes in below expectations
Lower-than-expected policy rates could reduce Perma-Pipe's costs on borrowings as facilities reprice or new borrowing is needed, leaving more project revenue after interest to cover other costs and earnings.

Perma-Pipe makes piping systems to order, and recognizes much of the revenue as work progresses; this report shows whether project sales are keeping their margin after costs.
Read sales, gross margin and receivables together. Rising sales with gross margin near the 33% reported for the prior fiscal year would indicate project execution and cost recovery are broadly keeping pace. Slower sales or a lower margin would point to project timing, steel and other input costs, or customers resisting price increases squeezing profit. If receivables also rise, turning recognized revenue into cash is taking longer; together, these measures show whether project growth is producing profit and cash the business can keep.
