Company overview

CPI Card Group helps banks and other card issuers turn customer account data into ready-to-use payment cards. Customers pay it to manufacture cards, encode chips, print cardholder details and mail completed cards. Debit and credit cards and their related services provide most revenue; prepaid program managers also buy cards, tamper-evident packaging and fulfillment services.

Its Card@Once system lets financial institutions produce personalized, permanent cards at their own locations. CPI earns from the initial hardware sale and recurring card-issuance activity, alongside its factory-based production and mailing business.

A small group of direct customers supplies most revenue, with one customer contributing a substantial share. Many of these customers are resellers serving numerous smaller institutions, so direct-customer concentration does not mean dependence on only a few underlying banks. Most contracts do not commit customers to longer-term order volumes. Production also relies heavily on one supplier for chips and antennas. To remain eligible to produce and personalize branded payment cards, CPI must maintain audited facility and cardholder-data security standards required by payment-card networks.

The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.

CPI's results hinge on payment-card issuance, renewal cycles and contactless adoption, but closer card-production rivals CompoSecure and IDEMIA are missing from this list.

  • Fiserv competes with CPI for financial institutions that pay to put customer details on payment cards and issue them, but these services are a much smaller part of Fiserv's broader processing business. Watch its card-personalization and issuance offerings rather than overall revenue, which mainly comes from account- and transaction-based processing and service fees.
