Company overview

Platinum Group Metals Ltd.’s business centers on Waterberg, its only material mineral property, in South Africa. It holds a majority economic interest through direct and indirect ownership and operates the project through a joint venture. The plan is to build an underground mine and a plant that separates metal-bearing concentrate from ore, targeting mainly palladium, platinum and rhodium. Sales to smelters or refiners would provide the project’s revenue; it has not begun selling any product.

The company currently funds its work mainly by issuing securities. Before mine financing and a construction decision can proceed, Waterberg must secure concentrate sales or processing arrangements that establish how it will earn revenue. No formal terms have been agreed. Implats, a project shareholder, has the right to match third-party concentrate purchase terms. Platinum Group Metals has also covered Implats’ unpaid shares of earlier project budgets, so partner funding affects its own cash needs.

Development also requires a water-use licence and additional surface rights for mine infrastructure. The project has environmental authorization and a mining right, but the mining-right grant faces a court challenge from people claiming to represent two host communities.

Platinum Group Metals LTD.’s prospects hinge on platinum-group-metal prices, financing Waterberg and securing concentrate processing; Implats holds a project stake and a right to match offtake offers, but formal offtake terms remain unagreed.

  • Sibanye-Stillwater’s metals-market and operating news offers a reference point for Platinum Group Metals LTD.’s planned Waterberg mine: it already produces platinum-group metals in South Africa and palladium in the United States.
