Company

Company overview

Phunware helps businesses build and run mobile apps that connect them with their users. Its recent sales efforts focus on luxury hotel guest experiences and healthcare patient experiences. Customers pay for cloud-based software licenses, usually under multi-year subscriptions, and for customized app development and support. They can add functions such as content updates, messaging, maps and navigation to new or existing apps. Software subscriptions and services account for most revenue.

A smaller business sells advertising within mobile apps. Advertisers pay to reach mobile-device users, generally based on how many ads are delivered, though fees can also depend on views, clicks or other actions.

A substantial share of revenue comes from two customers, and subscription customers are not obliged to renew when their contracts end. Advertising also depends on access to user-interaction data and suitable ad inventory. Privacy rules restrict how Phunware can collect and use device and location data; its targeting services in Europe are subject to the GDPR.

Phunware’s results hinge chiefly on winning and renewing hospitality and healthcare mobile-app projects; watch named rivals Airship, Apadmi, Mutual Mobile, Pointr and Purple, which are absent from this list.

  • Orangekloud Technology Inc. competes for organizations’ mobile-app budgets, selling an app-building platform and customization services against Phunware’s application frameworks and development work. Watch its eMOBIQ platform, which lets business customers build mobile and web apps without coding and connect them to enterprise management software.

  • Liftoff Mobile, Inc. competes with Phunware for advertisers’ mobile-app spending: both help advertisers attract users and app publishers earn money from ads, though advertising made up only 11% of Phunware’s 2025 revenue. Liftoff’s Core Advertising revenue is the line to watch for this overlap, rather than its legacy platforms and non-advertising offerings.
