Company

Company overview

Pitney Bowes serves small businesses, large enterprises and government agencies that need to send and track mail and parcels. Most revenue comes from SendTech Solutions: customers buy or lease mailing and shipping equipment and pay for supplies, maintenance and software subscriptions. Its digital tools let customers compare carriers, buy postage and print labels, including within ecommerce applications. The company also earns financing income, with its wholly owned Pitney Bowes Bank financing equipment purchases and offering credit for mailing-related spending.

The other business, Presort Services, charges customers to collect and sort large volumes of mail before handing them to the postal system. By doing part of the postal service’s preparation work, it helps customers qualify for lower postage rates.

Much of the business depends on reliable, affordable postal delivery, particularly from the United States Postal Service (USPS), and on demand for physical mail, whose volumes continue to decline. SendTech also depends on its contracts with USPS and other carriers. Postal authorities set postage-rate guidelines, oversee existing offerings and require approval for many new products and services, limiting what Pitney Bowes can offer and on what terms.

Pitney Bowes’ results depend more on mailing-equipment renewals, declining physical-mail volumes and USPS workshare discounts than on the supplied candidates’ businesses, making USPS the name to watch.
