Outset Medical supplies healthcare providers with Tablo, a system for blood-filtering treatment known as hemodialysis. Its compact console purifies tap water and makes dialysis fluid as needed. The company sells primarily directly to U.S. customers, with hospitals its main focus, and helps hospitals run dialysis themselves rather than outsource it. Tablo is also cleared for use in clinics and patients’ homes.
Customers buy a console up front, then purchase disposable Tablo cartridges for treatments and service agreements covering maintenance, repairs, training, cloud connectivity and software updates. Consumables are the largest revenue line; together, consumables and services bring in more revenue than new consoles and accessories. Nearly all revenue is tied to Tablo, and the largest customer accounts for a meaningful share of sales.
The business depends on providers buying more consoles and continuing to use those already installed. Hospital capital budgets affect equipment purchases, while dialysis reimbursement, including Medicare payments, influences what customers can afford to pay. Home expansion also depends on providers establishing programs and training patients. Outset must keep its devices compliant with FDA requirements, cannot promote uses outside cleared indications, and may need new regulatory clearance or approval for product changes.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
Outset Medical’s results hinge on hospitals bringing dialysis in-house, use of installed Tablo systems and home-hemodialysis adoption, where Quanta is another direct equipment rival missing from this list.
Fresenius Medical Care challenges Outset on two fronts: it sells competing acute and home dialysis systems, including NxStage, and provides hospital dialysis services instead of hospitals buying Outset’s Tablo equipment and support to run dialysis themselves. Watch its hospital dialysis services and home-dialysis product sales for competition with Outset’s two routes to growth.
DaVita competes with Outset over how dialysis is delivered: DaVita provides dialysis services, while Outset sells hospitals Tablo equipment and support to bring treatment in-house. DaVita’s news about dialysis services for hospitals is more directly relevant to that choice than its broader U.S. business treating people with chronic kidney failure.

DaVita provides dialysis services to hospitals; its report will show how strongly that option competes with hospitals buying Outset Medical’s Tablo equipment and support.
Focus on DaVita’s dialysis services for hospitals, not its broader care for people with chronic kidney failure. Stronger hospital services would show that outsourcing remains a strong option, putting more pressure on Outset Medical’s opportunity to sell Tablo for in-house treatment; weaker services would ease that competitive pressure but would not prove hospitals are switching to Tablo.
Fed Interest Rate Decision
Outset Medical’s rate-sensitive Perceptive loan makes Federal Reserve rate decisions matter because higher rates can raise what it pays in interest and reduce cash available for its Tablo business.

If it comes in above expectations
Higher-than-expected rates can raise interest on Outset Medical’s floating-rate loan, leaving less cash to fund Tablo sales, service and operations.
If it comes in below expectations
Lower-than-expected rates can reduce interest on Outset Medical’s floating-rate loan, leaving more cash available for Tablo sales, service and operations.

Outset Medical sells Tablo consoles, treatment consumables and service; this report will show whether revenue from installed systems is growing alongside console sales.
Compare console and accessory revenue with consumables and service revenue. Growth in consumables and service alongside console sales would show that new and installed Tablo systems are bringing repeat treatment and support revenue; if console sales do not translate into more consumables and service, the installed base has yet to demonstrate durable follow-on income.
