Company

Company overview

NVE Corp uses electron spin to make devices that detect magnetic fields or transmit information, with some products also transferring power. It sells standard products and designs custom sensors, primarily for medical devices. Product sales provide nearly all revenue; paid research and development contracts contribute a small share.

Customers buy directly or through distributors that stock and resell NVE’s products, including Digi-Key. Revenue depends heavily on a few large customers: Abbott Laboratories and certain distributors are among them, and a single customer accounts for a substantial share of total revenue.

NVE performs most fabrication and product testing at its own U.S. facility, while sending some products to Asia for packaging. Production depends on single-source suppliers for many wafers, with no qualified alternatives for many of them. Its ability to supply customers therefore rests on both its own manufacturing operations and outside wafer and packaging suppliers.

Moat

NVEC says it has a moat. Does it hold up?

Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.

  • NVE's revenue depends in part on purchases by Abbott Laboratories, a healthcare-products maker and a named large customer; losing Abbott could materially hurt NVE. Watch Abbott's purchases of NVE products rather than its overall healthcare sales.

  • Allegro MicroSystems, Inc. competes with NVE to supply chips that measure magnetic fields, position and current, using GMR and TMR sensing technologies. Allegro sells mainly to automotive and industrial customers, so its magnetic-sensor sales are the line to watch for demand and competition relevant to NVE.

  • Vishay Intertechnology competes with NVE for electronic-equipment designs that need to pass signals while keeping circuits electrically isolated: Vishay sells optocouplers, an alternative to NVE's spintronic couplers.

  • STMicroelectronics competes with NVE to supply devices that transmit signals across electrically isolated circuits and control or convert power. Its digital isolation and power-management devices offer alternatives to NVE's couplers, voltage regulators and integrated converters.

  • NXP Semiconductors competes with NVE for electronic-equipment designs through sensors that use magnetic fields to measure position. NXP has much broader automotive exposure, so its magnetic position sensors—not its whole chip business—are the relevant comparison for NVE.

  • Everspin Technologies, Inc overlaps NVE by licensing magnetic-field sensing technology, known as TMR, and selling magnetic memory, or MRAM, although memory is not NVE's main revenue source. Its licensing for three-dimensional magnetic-field sensing is worth watching alongside NVE's sensor business; NVE's memory work focuses on low-bit-density uses such as detecting or preventing tampering.

Agenda

  1. Time to be announced
    Major

    NVE Corp earningsThis company

Product sales make up most of NVE's revenue, and this report will show whether sales growth is holding up product margins.

  2. Time to be announced

    Abbott Laboratories earningsABT

Abbott is a major NVE customer, so any disclosure about relevant demand or purchases from NVE would help readers gauge this part of NVE's sales.

  1. 2:00 PMET

    Fed Interest Rate Decision

NVE’s decision tracks the Federal Reserve’s policy rate, which influences market rates and can change the value and income of its marketable securities, a major part of its assets.

in 9 daysThu, Oct 29

  1. Time to be announced

    Allegro MicroSystems, Inc. earningsALGM

Allegro's magnetic sensors compete with NVE for some industrial designs, so its relevant sales and competitive commentary can illuminate shared demand and pressure.

  2. Time to be announced

    STMicroelectronics N.V. earningsSTM

STMicroelectronics sells alternatives to NVE's couplers and power products, so its relevant business can show demand and competitive pressure in markets they share.

in 15 daysWed, Nov 4

  1. Time to be announced

    Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. earningsVSH

Vishay's optocouplers can replace NVE's signal-isolating couplers, so relevant demand and pricing can show how competitive those designs are.
