Company

Company overview

NerdWallet operates a digital platform where consumers and small and mid-sized businesses use financial articles, comparison tools and eligibility checks to find financial products. Banks, insurers, lenders and other providers pay it for clicks, customer leads or completed actions such as funded loans, depending on the arrangement. Insurance is its largest revenue category, with fees mainly tied to clicks; other categories include credit cards, loans and banking.

The company also earns revenue from brokerage and advisory services, including mortgage brokerage and direct management of clients’ investments. These activities go beyond introducing customers to providers. Mortgage and some insurance brokerage activities require licenses, while investment management is subject to investment-adviser regulation and regulatory examinations.

Most of its business comes from the United States. Revenue depends on attracting users, particularly through Google search, and connecting them with providers willing to pay for business. Partners’ marketing budgets and lending approval standards affect how many connections earn fees. Search rankings therefore matter to customer traffic, while providers’ appetite for new customers matters to turning that traffic into revenue.

NerdWallet's results hinge on financial providers' customer-acquisition budgets and consumer traffic, with Credit Karma and Bankrate important marketplace rivals missing from this list.

  • LendingTree competes with NerdWallet for consumers comparing financial products and for the lenders, card issuers and insurers that pay both platforms for referrals. Its insurance, credit-card and loan businesses are the areas to watch for competition with NerdWallet.

  • QuinStreet competes with NerdWallet for financial providers' customer-acquisition spending: both get paid for qualified clicks, prospective-customer inquiries and other actions rather than just advertising exposure. Watch QuinStreet's financial-services business, which overlaps with NerdWallet more directly than its home-services business.

  • Gen Digital's MoneyLion and Engine marketplaces compete with NerdWallet to connect consumers with financial products, while Gen also sells consumers cyber-safety subscriptions. Watch MoneyLion products and Engine marketplace offerings within its Trust-Based Solutions segment rather than treating Gen's overall results as a readout of NerdWallet's market.

    Housing Starts (Sep)

NerdWallet’s mortgage brokerage earns revenue from customer transactions, so readings on new-home construction and sales matter because stronger housing activity can bring more mortgage customers, while weaker activity can mean fewer transactions.

    Fed Interest Rate Decision

NerdWallet’s consumer-loan, SMB and mortgage marketplaces and brokerage earn referral or transaction fees when customers act, so the Fed’s rate decision matters because it can change borrowing costs and demand for those products.
