Company

Company overview

NuCana plc uses its ProTide technology to chemically modify nucleoside compounds into potential cancer treatments. Its main candidates are NUC-7738 and NUC-3373. NUC-7738 is being tested with pembrolizumab in metastatic melanoma. After closing a NUC-3373 trial to prioritize resources, the company is evaluating combinations and cancer types for possible further trials.

No NuCana medicine has marketing approval, so drug buyers do not yet provide product-sales revenue. The company funds development with its cash and capital raising, including share sales. It plans to earn mainly from medicine sales if candidates gain approval and reach the market, with strategic partnerships as another possible revenue source.

That path depends on clinical results, regulatory approval and manufacturing supply. NuCana relies on outside organizations to run trials and manufacture its candidates, and expects to outsource commercial production too. It also needs access to funding; U.S. securities rules currently limit how much it can raise through its Form F-3 shelf registration, potentially requiring other financing routes.

NuCana’s outlook depends chiefly on NUC-7738 results in PD-1 inhibitor-resistant melanoma and access to financing, rather than on these mostly distant peers’ operating performance.

  • Immutep Limited offers a competing approach to NuCana’s effort to improve pembrolizumab-based melanoma treatment: Immutep has tested efti with pembrolizumab, while NuCana is testing NUC-7738 with it. Watch Immutep’s melanoma combination results, but the differing trial populations limit direct comparisons.
