Company

Company overview

MaxCyte serves biopharmaceutical companies and academic researchers that engineer cells for drug discovery and cell-therapy development. Its ExPERT Flow Electroporation instruments use electrical pulses to process cells without viral delivery. The company supplies the technology rather than developing its own therapeutic candidates.

Research customers typically buy an instrument outright, while cell-therapy developers pay annual fees to use licensed instruments. Both buy single-use processing assemblies designed only for MaxCyte’s instruments. Equipment, assemblies and license fees supply most revenue. Some therapy developers also sign SPL agreements that pay MaxCyte when their programs reach clinical or regulatory milestones and can provide payments linked to eventual product sales. MaxCyte had received milestone payments but no commercial payments from SPL customers as of the end of 2025.

Revenue is concentrated among a small group of customers, with one cell-therapy licensee supplying a substantial share. Equipment and assembly demand depends on customers’ research budgets and continued use of the platform; milestone and sales-linked payments depend on their therapies advancing, gaining regulatory approval and reaching the market. MaxCyte does not control those development decisions or outcomes. U.S. export controls and sanctions also restrict where and to whom it can sell, with some exports requiring authorization.

MaxCyte’s results hinge on cell-therapy customers’ spending and clinical milestones, with Lonza and privately held Miltenyi Biotec also worth watching as competitors in cell engineering.

  • Bio-Rad competes for the laboratory customers buying MaxCyte’s cell-engineering instruments, selling equipment that uses electrical pulses to deliver material into cells—a process called electroporation—and other biological research instruments. Watch its Life Science business rather than its larger Clinical Diagnostics business for developments relevant to MaxCyte’s research customers.

  • Thermo Fisher competes with MaxCyte for research and biopharmaceutical customers that pay for technologies to deliver material into cells using electrical pulses or other methods without viruses. Its developments in these electroporation and non-viral delivery products are the news most directly relevant to MaxCyte, rather than results across its broader laboratory products and services businesses.
