Magnachip Semiconductor supplies components that control and convert electrical power in electronics, vehicles and industrial equipment. Its Power Analog Solutions line, including power-switching components, generates most revenue; Power IC chips provide a smaller stream. The company has exited its Display business, retaining limited activities to fulfill existing customer obligations.
Electronics manufacturers must first select and qualify Magnachip’s components for their products. Sales then depend on those products reaching mass production, end-market demand and how customers divide orders among approved suppliers. Most sales go through authorized agents and distributors. Revenue is concentrated among a small group of customers, with SAMT Co., Ltd. contributing a particularly large share.
Magnachip has substantial manufacturing operations in Korea and uses outside foundries for certain Power IC products. Its manufacturing economics depend on keeping factories well used, while some chip deliveries depend on an independent foundry’s allocation of capacity. U.S. export controls and sanctions can restrict sales to, or sourcing from, affected parties.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
Alpha and Omega competes with Magnachip to supply chips that deliver and control power—MOSFETs, IGBTs and power ICs—to computing, consumer-electronics, communications and power-supply manufacturers. Its computing sales are worth watching: that is its largest market and one Magnachip also serves.
ON Semiconductor competes with Magnachip for automotive, industrial and other electronics manufacturers' spending on chips that switch and manage power, including MOSFETs, IGBTs and power-management devices.
Diodes and Magnachip face both competing orders and shared exposure to Asian electronics demand: each sells chips that switch or manage power, with Diodes' MOSFETs and analog power-management devices competing against Magnachip's power discretes and ICs.
Monolithic Power Systems competes with Magnachip for electronics manufacturers' orders for chips that manage power, convert voltage and control lighting. Watch its compact, integrated power-management products, which it says reduce component count and power consumption—the features it offers customers choosing between suppliers.
Power Integrations Inc competes with Magnachip to get its power-conversion and LED-driver chips chosen for power supplies and other electronic equipment. Watch its products that combine power switches and control circuits: the company says they let customers use fewer components and finish designs faster.
Navitas competes for power-conversion designs that could otherwise use Magnachip's silicon power devices, offering equipment makers devices made with gallium nitride (GaN) and silicon carbide (SiC). Its increasing focus on higher-power applications shifts where that competition takes place.
Analog Devices competes with Magnachip to supply customers with chips that regulate power and drive LED lighting, including switching regulators and LED drivers. Its much broader high-performance analog business makes its overall results a less direct comparison for Magnachip.
Microchip competes with Magnachip for industrial, automotive and consumer manufacturers' power-management orders: its analog products are alternatives to Magnachip's chips that convert and regulate voltage and manage power.
Fed Interest Rate Decision
Magnachip’s Fed rate matters because it can move the three-month CD rate that sets the interest cost on its working-capital loan.
Expected4.0%Last release4.0%
If it comes in above expectations
A higher-than-expected policy rate could lift the loan’s interest rate, raising what Magnachip pays to service its working-capital debt.
If it comes in below expectations
A lower-than-expected policy rate could ease the loan’s interest rate, reducing the interest Magnachip pays on its working-capital debt.
Magnachip Semiconductor Corp. earningsThis company
Magnachip's report will show whether demand for low-voltage MOSFETs used in communications can offset price pressure on older products in China and steady sales and gross margin in its Power business.
Read Power Solutions revenue alongside its gross margin. Rising revenue with a firmer margin would suggest demand and product mix are offsetting price pressure on older products; declines in both would show that competition is still eroding sales and the profit earned on each sale. The two together will show whether Magnachip's Power business is stabilizing.
Alpha and Omega Semiconductor Limited earningsAOSL
Alpha and Omega Semiconductor's report will show how computing customers' demand for MOSFETs, IGBTs and power ICs is changing, in a market where its chips compete for orders with Magnachip's Power products.
Compare Alpha and Omega Semiconductor's computing sales with its total sales. If computing grows faster, demand looks resilient in a market Magnachip also serves, but Alpha and Omega's products may also be winning orders there; if computing weakens relative to the total, demand in that market may be softening, not shifting to Magnachip. The report can flag shared-market demand and competitive pressure, but cannot show on its own whether Magnachip won or lost orders.
