Company overview

Project developers, independent power producers and utilities hire SOLV Energy to turn planned power projects into operating facilities. Most revenue comes from building new solar plants, including plants paired with battery storage; it also builds standalone storage and related transmission and distribution infrastructure. Customers usually buy solar modules and batteries themselves, while SOLV handles design, other equipment procurement, construction and bringing the facility into operation.

Customers pay for early engineering and site work before signing a fixed-price engineering, procurement and construction contract. SOLV then receives a payment when work starts and bills monthly as construction progresses. Its project profits depend on estimating and controlling the cost of delivering that agreed scope. A smaller business operates and maintains completed plants under long-term contracts, charging a fixed fee for routine work and additional fees for repairs based on labor and materials used. A relatively small group of large customers supplies most revenue.

Demand depends partly on customers’ ability to finance projects and qualify for federal clean-energy tax credits. U.S. law has tightened the construction-start and operating deadlines for solar projects to qualify, and restricts eligibility based on certain foreign ownership, influence and equipment sourcing, including connections to China. These rules affect which customer projects can receive incentives and the equipment they can use.

SOLV Energy’s results hinge on U.S. utility-scale solar and storage investment and construction execution, with privately held Kiewit, Mortenson and McCarthy also competing for projects.

  • Primoris Services Corporation competes with SOLV Energy for contracts to design, buy equipment for and build renewable-energy and battery-storage projects, as well as electric transmission and distribution systems. Its Energy segment’s work for renewable-energy and storage customers is the part to watch for competition facing SOLV.

  • MasTec, Inc. competes with SOLV Energy for clean-energy construction and power-delivery contracts, earning fees from energy and utility customers for engineering and building infrastructure. Watch its Clean Energy and Infrastructure and Power Delivery businesses for activity in the markets where SOLV bids for work.

  • Quanta Services competes with SOLV Energy to design and build power-generation and electric-grid infrastructure for utilities and energy developers. Its ability to win those customer contracts and deliver the work effectively is the competitive benchmark to watch for SOLV.
