Microsoft reportedly exits Nscale UK data-center deal over power issues
The reported withdrawal highlights a concrete power-supply obstacle to Microsoft's planned cloud capacity. Shares rose 0.84% alongside related companies, recovering only part of Friday's decline.
A report published before Monday's open said Microsoft had pulled out of Nscale's UK data-center deal because of power-supply problems. [1] Electricity availability is a practical constraint on cloud expansion: a facility needs power before it can serve customers' workloads. If suitable replacement capacity is unavailable when needed, the withdrawal could delay Microsoft's ability to handle additional workloads and earn the associated usage revenue.
Microsoft's 0.84% gain is best understood as participation in a modest rebound among related companies. The median gain in a six-company comparison group that includes Alphabet, Amazon and Oracle was 1%, with five stocks rising and one falling. Microsoft's trading volume was around normal, at 18.0 million shares versus a typical 21.2 million.
The rebound recovered only part of Friday's 1.9% decline and left Microsoft below the 52-week closing high it reached on October 13. That pullback follows a strong run: over the past 21 trading days, Microsoft gained 8%, compared with 0.53% for the S&P 500 and a 2.9% decline in the comparison group's median return. The recent retreat has trimmed, rather than erased, that relative strength.
