Company

Company overview

Individual investors pay MarketWise for investment ideas, stock-analysis tools and software to monitor and manage their portfolios. It sells these services online through multiple brands, with products such as Chaikin Power Gauge, TradeStops and Altimeter. Software and analytical tools account for the larger share of customer billings, while subscriptions to research and software together generate most revenue. Customers generally pay upfront for a subscription term; membership customers pay an initial access charge and then an annual maintenance fee.

MarketWise attracts customers through advertising and free publications, then offers paid subscriptions and additional or higher-priced products. Long-standing subscribers supply most customer billings. The business depends on retaining those customers, persuading them to buy more and attracting new paying subscribers. Its brands also rely heavily on the ideas and reputations of their editors and editorial teams.

The investment-newsletter business relies on a publisher’s exclusion from investment-adviser regulation. To qualify, its publications must remain general and impersonal, genuine and disinterested, and issued routinely rather than timed to market events. Losing that exclusion could require registration and could prevent MarketWise from continuing to offer investment research services.

MarketWise's results hinge on winning and keeping individual investors who pay for research and software, with The Motley Fool and Seeking Alpha among the alternatives to watch.

  • Aether Holdings, Inc. competes with MarketWise for investors' subscription spending: its SentimenTrader platform sells research, stock indicators and analytical tools to individual and institutional investors. SentimenTrader's subscription revenue offers a signal of investors' willingness to pay for investment tools—the same demand MarketWise relies on among self-directed investors.
