Company

Company overview

Most of McGraw Hill’s revenue comes from U.S. school and higher education materials, with the two businesses contributing roughly equally. Digital products generate most revenue overall, although print remains important, especially in school curricula.

School districts buy combined digital and print curricula directly from McGraw Hill under multi-year contracts and typically pay upfront for curriculum licenses. Sales depend on public-school funding and state purchasing cycles, particularly in California, Florida and Texas. Materials must meet state academic standards and other approval criteria to qualify for adoption.

In higher education, instructors choose course materials and students buy access or print copies, mainly through online retailers and distribution partners. Evergreen supplies regularly updated digital content through existing learning solutions and accounts for most higher education revenue. Demand depends on instructor adoption and student enrollment. A small group of resellers handles sales and digital fulfillment; one supplies a meaningful share of company revenue, making its orders and payments important.

Smaller businesses sell medical and engineering resources, including subscriptions to Access, and distribute school and college materials internationally, often adapting U.S. content for local markets.

McGraw Hill’s results hinge on school curriculum purchasing cycles and college courseware adoption; watch Cengage in higher education and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt in K–12, neither shown here.

  • Pearson competes with McGraw Hill for colleges’ and students’ spending on digital courseware and printed learning materials. Watch Pearson’s higher-education courseware business for signs of changing instructor adoption and student demand—the same forces that shape McGraw Hill’s college sales.

  • Stride, Inc. and McGraw Hill compete to sell K–12 curricula to schools and districts, but Stride also supplies teaching and school-support services. Its curriculum sales to those customers are the closer comparison for McGraw Hill’s digital and print school materials than its broader service business.

  • RELX’s Elsevier business competes with McGraw Hill to supply medical and technical learning content to institutions and learners, a narrower overlap than McGraw Hill’s school and college markets. Watch that content business rather than RELX’s overall results: McGraw Hill’s Global Professional segment contributed about 7% of revenue in the fiscal year ended March 31, 2026.
