Company

Company overview

MediWound’s only approved product, NexoBrid, is applied to deep burns to remove dead tissue using enzymes derived from pineapple stems. Burn centers and hospital burn units buy it directly in Europe and Israel, while distributors serve other markets. In North America, exclusive partner Vericel sells NexoBrid; MediWound supplies the drug and receives payments for those supplies, sales royalties and potential sales milestones. Its U.S. commercial business therefore depends heavily on Vericel. EscharEx, its treatment for chronic and hard-to-heal wounds, remains in clinical development.

Paid development services have generated more revenue than product sales, with U.S. government customers BARDA and DoW/MTEC together supplying most revenue. Their contracts supported NexoBrid development, emergency preparedness and a temperature-stable formulation for military field care. Those contracts expired in 2025, so that revenue stream depends on securing further funded work rather than simply continuing the former contracts.

Production relies on one site in Yavne, Israel, and on Challenge Bioproducts Corporation in Taiwan as the sole supplier of a key enzyme starting material. Commercial supply from MediWound’s expanded facility requires regulatory approval. Israeli rules also require prior approval to transfer technology or manufacturing rights developed with Israel Innovation Authority funding outside Israel, limiting its ability to move that work abroad.

MediWound also relies heavily on U.S. government development funding and on CBC to supply the bromelain starting material for its enzyme therapies.

  • MediWound depends on Vericel to buy NexoBrid and market it exclusively in North America, earning supply revenue, royalties and potential sales-milestone payments. Watch Vericel’s NexoBrid sales through specialty distributors to hospitals and burn centers: those sales drive royalties, while its orders from MediWound drive supply revenue.

  • Smith & Nephew’s SANTYL ointment removes dead tissue from chronic wounds using enzymes—the established treatment MediWound’s still-developing EscharEx would challenge. SANTYL’s U.S. sales show the incumbent revenue base at stake, but EscharEx, if approved, would still need to persuade physicians to change treatments.

  • MiMedx sells wound-healing tissue grafts to the clinical market MediWound is targeting with EscharEx, and supports the program through research collaboration. Its U.S. wound-treatment sales offer a view of the customer market EscharEx aims to enter, rather than a direct source of MediWound revenue.

  • Solventum already sells negative-pressure wound treatments and advanced dressings into the wound-care market MediWound’s EscharEx aims to enter, and supports its research program. Watch those wound-care products within Solventum’s MedSurg business, rather than its dental products or software, for a view of that shared market.
