Company overview

Police, military personnel, first responders and border officials use 908 Devices’ instruments to identify unknown materials where they encounter them. Its MX908 uses mass spectrometry, while devices such as XplorIR and VipIR use optical spectroscopy to analyze substances. Built-in software turns sensor readings into answers for health and safety decisions. Government organizations are its main customers, with life sciences customers a smaller market.

Device purchases generate most revenue and create opportunities for subsequent sales of extended service plans, software and accessories. These account for most recurring revenue, rather than consumables. MX908 also uses disposable sampling swabs for liquid and solid analysis, but some of its applications require no consumables; the other named handheld devices do not use consumables.

908 Devices sells directly and through channel partners, which bring in a significant share of revenue. Sales depend heavily on government budgets, testing and procurement approvals, and a few large orders can account for much of revenue in a given period. Government contracting rules constrain its eligibility for awards, while export controls can require authorization and limit overseas sales or deployment.

908 Devices’ results hinge on government chemical-detection budgets and handheld deployments; Inficon and Rigaku are also competitors to watch beyond this list.

  • Teledyne competes for the same military and public-safety purchases as 908 Devices, selling portable chemical-detection systems against its handheld instruments.

  • Thermo Fisher competes with 908 Devices for first-responder and government purchases, offering portable instruments that identify chemicals against 908 Devices’ handheld analyzers.

  • Bruker competes with 908 Devices in detecting and identifying chemicals, selling instruments that analyze samples using mass spectrometry and spectroscopy. Its BSI CALID business, which includes chemical analysis and detection, is the part to watch for competing products.

  • Astrotech competes with 908 Devices’ handheld analyzers for border, military and law-enforcement spending on narcotics and chemical detection. Its TRACER 1000 instruments detect traces of explosives and narcotics in seconds; orders for these detectors are the product-level signal to watch.
