Businesses use Lumen Technologies to connect offices, data centers and cloud computing resources, while other communications providers use its network to carry their customers’ traffic. These customers, along with government agencies, supply most of Lumen’s revenue. They pay for data connections, internet access and services that manage and protect their networks.
Lumen also lets customers build their own networks using its unused optical fiber and the underground ducts that house cables. It combines network infrastructure and services in custom offerings such as Private Connectivity Fabric (PCF). Alongside these offerings, it continues to earn revenue from established private data networks, dedicated connections and traditional telephone services.
Lumen sold its residential and small-business fiber-to-the-home business to AT&T and expects broadband to play a much smaller role in its strategy. It still provides copper-based broadband and telephone services to residential and small-business customers.
The business depends on maintaining and upgrading its network and securing access beyond the infrastructure it owns. Lumen leases a substantial part of its fiber network and relies on other carriers and cloud companies for capacity and interconnection. It also needs operating licenses and permission to place cables and equipment on others’ property. Eligibility for certain U.S. defense contracts depends on meeting cybersecurity requirements.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
AT&T competes with Lumen for business customers buying fixed-line communications, but the two also provide each other network services following AT&T’s purchase of Lumen’s residential fiber business. Watch AT&T’s Business Wireline results for competition in the business Lumen is now focusing on.
Verizon competes with Lumen for large enterprises and government customers buying fiber-based connections in overlapping markets. Its business fiber offerings are the part to watch when assessing Lumen’s competition on network coverage, speed and price.
Uniti Group Inc. competes with Lumen in the United States to sell businesses fiber data transport, connectivity, managed communications and security services. Its business connectivity and managed-service results are more relevant to this rivalry than its residential fiber customer count.
Comcast competes with Lumen for enterprises paying for broadband, high-capacity data connections and voice services. Watch Comcast’s Business Services Connectivity results rather than its media or theme parks to assess this competition.
Microsoft is a customer for Lumen’s private fiber connections, buying them to support expansion of its cloud and AI infrastructure.
Dycom builds and maintains telecommunications infrastructure for Lumen, making it a supplier tied to Lumen’s network spending. Lumen accounted for 10.8% of Dycom’s fiscal 2026 revenue, but that included residential fiber work before the sale to AT&T, so the figure is not a clean measure of Lumen’s continuing enterprise investment.
Lumen uses optical networking technology supplied by Nokia to expand its high-capacity fiber connections.
Lumen uses networking equipment and technology supplied by Cisco to deliver network services to enterprise customers.
RINGCENTRAL, INC. pays Lumen to connect outgoing and incoming calls and support emergency calling, while competing with Lumen’s cloud communications services. Its cloud subscription business is therefore both a customer for Lumen’s calling services and a rival for businesses buying communications tools.
AT&T Inc. earningsT
AT&T’s Business Wireline results show demand for fixed connections among business customers in a market where it competes with Lumen and the two companies also provide each other network services.
Look at AT&T’s Business Wireline results. If they hold up, businesses are still buying fixed connections, which supports demand in Lumen’s market, though competition remains. If they weaken, demand or pricing may be under pressure, a market challenge for Lumen too. AT&T’s report cannot establish Lumen’s revenue or the scale of the network services the two companies provide each other.
RINGCENTRAL, INC. earningsRNG
RingCentral’s results show demand for cloud communications, a service it both buys call connections for from Lumen and competes with Lumen to sell.
Watch growth in RingCentral’s cloud communications business. Faster growth would show stronger company demand for these services and an expanding rival; more cloud calling could also support demand for Lumen’s call connections, though RingCentral’s report will not say how much revenue Lumen receives. Slower growth could ease competitive pressure while also pointing to softer demand for those connections.
Nokia Corporation earningsNOK
Nokia’s optical networking results offer a read on the market for technology Lumen uses to expand high-capacity fiber connections.
Watch Nokia’s optical networking business. If it strengthens, the market for this technology is active, a supportive industry signal as Lumen expands high-capacity fiber; if it weakens, activity in that market may be cooling. Nokia’s results do not show how much equipment Lumen buys, what it pays, or whether specific equipment is available to Lumen.
Microsoft Corp earningsMSFT
Microsoft’s report will show whether its cloud and AI infrastructure build-out continues, a source of demand for the private fiber connections Lumen provides.
Watch changes in Microsoft’s cloud business and infrastructure investment. If the cloud business expands and investment stays strong, projects that use private fiber connections appear to be moving ahead; if expansion or investment slows, the demand signal for Lumen’s connections weakens. Microsoft does not separately report purchases from Lumen, so this indicates the customer backdrop, not Lumen’s specific sales.
Fed Interest Rate Decision
The Fed’s rate decision signals the direction of borrowing costs across the economy; for Lumen, higher rates can make refinancing its debt more expensive and leave less cash for its network, while lower rates can ease that pressure.

If it comes in above expectations
If the Fed’s rate is above the estimate, higher rates could make Lumen’s future borrowing and refinancing costlier, leaving less cash for network investment and other needs.
If it comes in below expectations
If the Fed’s rate is below the estimate, lower rates could reduce Lumen’s future borrowing and refinancing costs, easing pressure on cash available for network investment and other needs.

Lumen’s report will show whether its enterprise network and digital services can grow profitably enough to offset shrinking legacy services.
Read Business revenue from Grow alongside Nurture and Harvest, which include Ethernet, VPN and legacy voice and private-line services. Then check Business adjusted EBITDA as a share of revenue; EBITDA is earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization. If Grow expands as older categories shrink and the margin holds, newer services are taking over without giving up much profitability. If Grow cannot make up for the declines, or the margin falls, the shift is not yet replacing enough revenue and profit.
