Company

Company overview

SemiLEDS buys equipment from vendors in China and resells it to a customer under purchase orders. This activity supplies the substantial majority of its revenue, and the business depends heavily on obtaining further equipment orders. Revenue is concentrated among a few customers whose large project purchases can change from quarter to quarter, generally without long-term commitments.

Alongside equipment resale, SemiLEDS makes LED chips and packaged components for industrial lighting, with a focus on ultraviolet applications such as curing materials. Packagers, distributors and end customers buy its LED products. It is moving toward supplying complete LED modules and systems with design and technical support, rather than only individual components. This business depends on customers adopting UV LEDs. To reduce intellectual-property litigation exposure, the company limits component sales to selected countries where it believes enforcement has historically been more limited.

SemiLEDs’ near-term results depend chiefly on concentrated, low-margin orders to buy and resell equipment, which generated 94% of fiscal 2025 revenue, rather than the LED demand reflected by Penguin Solutions’ Cree LED business.

  • Penguin Solutions’ Cree LED business competes with SemiLEDs to sell LED chips and packaged lighting components to lighting manufacturers and distributors. Watch Cree LED’s results for a read on that market, rather than Penguin’s overall results, since LEDs are only part of its business.
