Company

Company overview

Kodiak AI supplies hardware, software and support that let trucks drive autonomously. Its largest revenue source is licensing the Kodiak Driver to Atlas for industrial trucking in the Permian Basin. Atlas owns and operates the trucks and pays an annual fee for each vehicle; Kodiak provides software updates, autonomous-system maintenance and remote monitoring and assistance. Kodiak calls this Driver-as-a-Service.

The company also earns freight-hauling fees, charged by mile or load, using its own autonomous trucks. It plans to move long-haul customers to the licensing model after starting driverless highway operations. Separately, the U.S. military pays Kodiak to adapt its system for military ground vehicles. The U.S. Army remains a significant revenue source, though few deliverables remain under its existing contract and defense work is episodic.

Kodiak is still at an early stage of commercial deployment. Atlas was its only customer with driverless vehicles integrated into its fleet at the end of 2025, making further truck deployments central to the business. Atlas also has limited contractual rights that can restrict licensing to competitors. Expansion onto highways depends on extending the system’s demonstrated safe operating conditions. Operations must also comply with roadway-safety rules and differing state rules on driverless deployment.

Kodiak's results hinge on expanding paid driverless deployments beyond launch customer Atlas and on U.S. military autonomy contracts, while privately held Waabi is another important autonomous-driving rival to watch.

  • Aurora Innovation competes with Kodiak for freight fleets paying subscriptions to replace human-driven hauling with autonomous trucks. Watch customer growth for Aurora Driver for Freight, which began driverless commercial operations with Hirschbach and Uber Freight in April 2025: those are fleet relationships Kodiak is also competing to win.

  • Werner Enterprises Inc is both a fleet customer and deployment partner for Kodiak's autonomous-driving technology and a carrier selling conventional long-haul freight service that overlaps Kodiak's hauling business. Watch whether Werner's deployment moves to paid driverless subscriptions: Kodiak's growth depends on turning deployment partners into customers paying per-truck or per-mile license fees.

  • Pony AI offers a China-based comparison for Kodiak's U.S. fleet business, commercializing autonomous trucks for logistics platforms rather than competing for the same customers. Watch its robotruck business with logistics platforms and approvals for driverless trucking, rather than its passenger robotaxi business, for evidence of progress in the technology Kodiak sells.
