Intel loses more ground to chip peers, opening lower and sliding into the close
Intel fell 5.8% as chip stocks sold off. Sector selling explains much of the pressure, but Intel’s persistent underperformance leaves it a weak stock within a falling group.
Intel opened 2% lower Friday and kept falling, finishing down 5.8% near the session low. All six chip peers fell, with the middle performer down 4% against a 1.1% decline for the S&P 500, making sector selling the clearest explanation for much of the pressure. Volume was about normal and the move was ordinary for Intel; its extra decline alone does not establish a new company problem.
Tuesday’s brief rebound gave way to renewed selling, leaving Intel down 14% over the past five trading days against a 9% decline for its typical chip peer. Over the past 21 trading days, Intel has fallen 17%, while the typical peer has lost 4.6%. A broad-market recovery alone would leave that relative weakness unresolved; Intel would have to consistently keep pace with its chip peers to change that reading.
