Company

Company overview

ICICI Bank’s main business is commercial banking for individuals and businesses in India. Customers borrow to buy homes, meet personal needs or finance business operations, and pay the bank interest. Customer deposits supply most of its domestic funding; it also holds interest-earning securities. Interest is the group’s largest source of income. The bank earns additional fees for processing loans, handling payments and helping companies manage cash and trade transactions. Retail lending makes up the larger part of its loan book and is mostly secured by collateral.

Insurance is another substantial source of income. Its subsidiaries ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Company and ICICI Lombard General Insurance Company collect premiums from policyholders in return for insurance coverage and pay claims. The bank also earns commissions for distributing their policies, while other subsidiaries earn investment-management and securities-brokerage fees.

The banking business depends on retaining deposits, borrowers repaying and the gap between lending returns and funding costs. It is heavily tied to India’s economy. Reserve Bank of India rules require it to direct lending toward priority sectors such as agriculture and small enterprises and to maintain capital, cash reserves and liquid assets. Lending shortfalls can require certificate purchases or investments in lower-return government schemes, limiting how freely it can deploy its funds.
