Genie Energy Ltd. serves customers in U.S. markets where households and businesses can choose their energy supplier. Its main business, Genie Retail Energy (GRE), sells through providers including IDT Energy and Residents Energy. Retail energy supplies nearly all company revenue, with electricity accounting for most sales and natural gas a smaller share.
GRE buys energy wholesale, while local utilities deliver it and handle billing and collection for most customers. In many territories, utilities buy GRE’s customer receivables at a discount and take responsibility for collection, limiting GRE’s exposure to unpaid bills. GRE offers both fixed-price contracts and prices it can adjust monthly. Its earnings depend on the spread between customer prices and wholesale supply and related costs; fixed-price contracts limit its ability to pass on cost increases.
Weather affects consumption and purchase costs, while keeping customers requires competitive prices and replacing those who switch suppliers. Some GRE providers buy energy from BP Energy Company under an agreement that requires them to maintain specified covenants. Providers also need licenses in each state and utility territory and must follow rules governing marketing and customer contracts. After Maryland ended receivables purchases and utility billing for residential customers, Genie stopped serving those customers there.
The much smaller Genie Renewables business earns revenue mainly through Diversegy’s energy-procurement advisory commissions and fees. It also develops and operates solar projects through Genie Solar.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
Genie's results hinge on keeping retail customers and the gap between customer prices and wholesale energy costs, making BP Energy Company an important contracted supplier to watch outside this list.
Exelon's utilities offer regulated default electricity and gas supply in several of Genie's core Eastern and Midwestern markets, so their prices affect customers' willingness to switch to or stay with Genie's retail supply contracts and the margins Genie can earn. Watch Exelon's electricity and gas supply prices in these shared markets, rather than its transmission and distribution revenue.
Public Service Enterprise Group's PSE&G competes with Genie's retail suppliers for New Jersey customers choosing who sells them electricity and gas, while also providing supply when customers have no alternative supplier. PSE&G's default supply offer is the alternative Genie must persuade those customers to leave.
Con Edison's default electricity and gas supply prices in New York affect whether customers stay with Genie's retail contracts. Those supply offers matter more for Genie's customer retention than Con Edison's own earnings from delivering electricity and gas.
EIA Crude Oil Stocks Change (Oct/16)
Genie Energy’s retail energy business buys electricity and natural gas wholesale to resell to households and businesses, so crude oil and gasoline stock readings can signal price pressure on supply costs that may widen or squeeze the difference between customer prices and those costs.
Read the inventory direction as a signal, not a direct measure of GRE’s electricity or natural-gas costs: tighter crude and gasoline supply may point to upward price pressure that squeezes its wholesale-cost-to-customer-price spread, while looser supply may ease cost pressure.
Exelon Corporation earningsEXC
Exelon’s report will show how its default electricity and gas offers in shared Eastern and Midwestern markets shape customers’ willingness to choose Genie Energy’s retail contracts.
Watch Exelon’s default electricity and gas prices in the shared markets, and how those offers compare with wholesale costs and Genie Energy’s retail contracts. More competitive default prices could reduce customers’ incentive to switch to or stay with Genie, pressuring retention or the rates it can charge. Higher default prices could make Genie’s contracts more attractive, but its margin still depends on the cost of buying energy.
GENIE ENERGY LTD earningsThis company
Genie Energy earns most of its revenue by reselling electricity and gas, and its report will show whether customer usage and rates can protect retail gross profit from supply costs.
Read retail energy gross profit and gross margin alongside customer usage, average rates, and unit supply costs. If revenue gains from usage and rates keep pace with supply costs and gross profit steadies, Genie is holding its resale spread. If costs keep rising while margin and gross profit fall, greater customer consumption is not offsetting the squeeze on the business.
