Company

Company overview

L.B. Foster Company gets most of its revenue from freight and passenger railroads, rail contractors and industrial customers. It supplies new rail and track components for replacement and expansion projects, selling both its own products and those bought from other manufacturers. It also sells systems that apply lubricants between wheels and rails, Total Track Monitoring equipment that checks railway conditions, and related engineering, project and aftermarket services.

Infrastructure products account for a substantial share of the business. Its CXT brand supplies precast concrete buildings, including park restrooms and storage buildings, alongside concrete products for bridges and utilities. It also supplies bridge forms to construction contractors and earns revenue from coating pipeline pipe against corrosion and threading pipe for water wells and irrigation.

Orders depend on customers’ construction and maintenance spending, especially rail capital spending and government-funded infrastructure projects. Many public projects carry “Buy America” or “Buy American” domestic-content requirements. Supply also matters: Rail Products relies on a limited number of suppliers for key products, while Protective Coatings depends predominantly on two epoxy-coating suppliers.

L.B. Foster’s results depend on railroad maintenance and expansion spending and civil-infrastructure demand for precast concrete, bridge products and pipeline coatings, which this list only partly captures.

  • Union Pacific’s freight traffic and investment in its rail network help gauge demand from railroads for L.B. Foster’s track components, systems that manage friction between wheels and rails, and monitoring equipment. Union Pacific earns revenue by hauling freight; watch its traffic and network investment for clues to demand for those rail products.
