Company

Company overview

Filana Therapeutics centers its business on simufilam, an experimental oral drug designed to modulate filamin A, a protein that helps organize structures within cells. After previously concentrating on Alzheimer’s disease, the company now focuses on epilepsy associated with tuberous sclerosis complex, or TSC. It plans to test whether simufilam can benefit patients with this rare condition.

The company has no approved products and earns no revenue from drug sales. It has funded operations mainly through stock offerings, collaboration payments and interest on its cash. If development and regulatory approval succeed, it could sell drugs itself or receive license fees and royalties from future collaborators. It currently lacks its own sales, marketing and distribution capabilities.

The proposed simufilam trial is under a full FDA clinical hold. Filana must supply additional information, including preclinical data, and revise the trial protocol before FDA review can allow it to begin. The business therefore depends heavily on getting simufilam through development and approval. It also relies on outside research and manufacturing providers, with Evonik its sole manufacturer of simufilam drug substance.

Filana’s prospects depend on simufilam succeeding in clinical trials and winning regulatory approval for TSC-related epilepsy, with Evonik supplying the drug substance and Yale University licensing the relevant intellectual property.
