Expensify helps businesses collect employee receipts, approve expenses and reimburse staff. Its SmartScan technology reads receipt photos automatically, and the platform carries expense information through approval, reconciliation and reimbursement, connecting with customers’ accounting systems. Most revenue comes from subscriptions. Businesses pay for the Collect or Control plans based on active members and service level, either through monthly usage-based billing or annual plans with a minimum seat commitment.
Employees and contractors often introduce Expensify by using its free expense-submission app, then persuade their employer to subscribe. Companies pay for most paid members, and the customer base is predominantly small and midsize businesses. Expense management drives most subscriptions, so the business depends on free users bringing in paying organizations and on those organizations renewing and maintaining or expanding paid membership.
Expensify also earns transaction fees, called interchange, when customers spend on the Expensify Card. That service relies on Marqeta, the Visa network and issuing bank Bancorp. Its payment services operate under money-transmitter licensing and anti-money-laundering requirements; missing required authorizations can limit where it offers those services.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
Expensify’s results hinge on keeping small and midsize businesses’ subscription seats and growing corporate-card spending while competing with private spend-management providers such as Ramp and Brex.
Navan competes with Expensify for companies paying to manage employee expenses, corporate payments and travel in one platform. Watch whether Navan’s integration of travel and expense data helps it win those customers.
SAP’s Concur travel and expense software competes with Expensify for businesses paying to manage expenses. Concur’s success with those customers is more relevant to Expensify than SAP’s broader cloud, software and services revenue.
Paylocity’s Airbase competes with Expensify for businesses buying tools to manage expenses, corporate cards and bill payments.
Expensify depends on Marqeta’s paid platform to issue corporate cards and process their transactions; losing that service could interrupt its card programs and add costs. Watch service continuity as Expensify’s Updated Card Program generated $21.3 million in interchange revenue in 2025, up from $9.2 million in 2024.

If SAP's report shows how Concur is faring with business customers, it will offer a window into the competition Expensify faces for paid expense-management customers.
Look for customer or business updates specifically about Concur; SAP's overall cloud revenue is not a substitute. If Concur is winning or retaining business customers, Expensify faces tougher competition for similar paid accounts, which can make customer acquisition and pricing harder. If Concur demand weakens, that pressure may ease, but it does not mean those customers will choose Expensify.

Marqeta's report will show activity and operating conditions on its card-issuing and transaction-processing platform, offering a window into a provider Expensify relies on for card services.
Read activity on Marqeta's platform alongside its operating updates. Steady transaction activity with no evident service problems would suggest that the platform Expensify relies on to issue and process corporate cards is functioning smoothly, supporting its ability to earn interchange from card spending. Weaker activity or service problems could put Expensify's card services at risk of interruption or a costlier transition. Marqeta's overall results do not establish how Expensify's own service is performing, so the conclusion is about supplier risk.

Expensify's report will show whether paid subscriptions are stabilizing and whether Expensify Card revenue, after cashback and service costs, is improving the platform's economics.
Read subscription revenue alongside interchange revenue from card spending, cashback rewards, and service costs. In 2025, subscription revenue fell to $130.5 million from $138.8 million in 2024, while interchange revenue rose to $21.3 million from $9.2 million; total revenue increased only slightly, and gross margin fell from 54% to 50%. If subscriptions stabilize and card revenue grows without rewards and costs absorbing the gain, Expensify is retaining paid users and making more of their card spending. If subscriptions keep weakening or costs erase the card revenue growth, the card business is not making up for pressure in the core subscription business.
