Company

Company overview

Ethan Allen helps customers furnish their homes with furniture and décor sold through its design centers and ethanallen.com. Its designers provide free interior design services, helping customers select products and customize fabrics, finishes and other details; customers pay for the furnishings, not the design advice. Sales through company-operated design centers account for most revenue. It also earns wholesale revenue by supplying independent Ethan Allen retailers and contract customers.

The company makes most of its furniture in its own North American facilities and sources the rest from outside suppliers. Most sales are completed in physical design centers, and the United States supplies nearly all revenue. The business therefore depends on consumers’ willingness to spend on their homes and their acceptance of Ethan Allen’s styles, rather than on any single large customer.

Ethan Allen’s results hinge on housing turnover and discretionary furnishing spending; Restoration Hardware is another important premium-furniture rival to watch beyond this list.

  • Bassett Furniture competes with Ethan Allen for shoppers seeking customizable branded furniture: both manufacture furniture and sell through company-owned and licensed stores with design help. Bassett’s retail sales offer a read on demand for furniture bought with design consultations.

  • Arhaus, Inc. competes with Ethan Allen for households buying premium furniture and décor through branded showrooms and online. Its sales of living-room, dining-room and bedroom furnishings offer a read on spending in that shared market.

  • Havertys competes with Ethan Allen for quality-conscious, relatively affluent shoppers buying branded home furniture, including custom upholstery. Demand for Havertys’ custom upholstered furniture is one concrete area to watch for this customer overlap.

  • Williams-Sonoma competes with Ethan Allen through Pottery Barn, West Elm and Williams Sonoma Home for shoppers buying higher-quality home furnishings in stores and online. Those brands’ furnishing sales are more directly relevant to Ethan Allen than the company’s broader home-products business.

  • La-Z-Boy competes with Ethan Allen in customizable upholstered furniture and other home furnishings, with both manufacturing and selling through branded store networks. Watch La-Z-Boy’s comments on shoppers choosing lower-priced products: it identifies that shift as a risk to its mid- to upper-mid-priced offering.

  • Wayfair’s furniture websites compete with Ethan Allen for household furniture and décor spending, though Wayfair mainly targets the mass market. Its specialty brands AllModern, Joss & Main and Perigold give investors a more focused place to watch than its broader mix of housewares and home-improvement products.

  • Bobs Discount Furniture, Inc. competes with Ethan Allen for U.S. households buying living-room, bedroom and dining-room furniture, but emphasizes lower-price value purchases. Its sales offer a view of the budget-focused end of that shared furniture market rather than Ethan Allen’s luxury positioning.
