Company

Company overview

Batteries generate most of Energizer Holdings’ sales. Its Energizer, Eveready and Rayovac brands supply household, specialty and hearing-aid batteries; it also makes portable lights. Retailers and distributors buy these products for resale, while equipment manufacturers and industrial and medical distributors provide another route to customers. Sales reach consumers worldwide through stores and e-commerce.

Auto care is a smaller but substantial business. Armor All and Nu Finish products clean and protect vehicles, STP supplies fuel and oil additives, and A/C PRO sells products that let vehicle owners recharge air-conditioning systems themselves.

A relatively small group of retailers accounts for a large share of sales, with Walmart a significant customer. The business depends on these retailers continuing to carry and order its brands: they can shift shelf space to competitors or private labels and demand lower prices.

Refrigerant rules also constrain part of the auto care business. Restrictions on R-134a limit the market for products containing it, while substitutes need regulatory approval for do-it-yourself and retrofit use.

Energizer’s results depend chiefly on household-battery demand, retail distribution and promotional pricing, making Walmart, its largest customer, the company to watch, while auto care contributes less.

  • Ultralife Corporation competes with Energizer to sell non-rechargeable lithium and specialty batteries to commercial equipment makers and industrial distributors, though Ultralife has greater defense exposure. Its commercial battery orders offer a closer read on Energizer’s competitive market than its military sales do.
