Ennis supplies the printed documents and materials businesses use, from business forms to labels, envelopes and presentation folders. Most products are made to customers’ specifications rather than sold as standard stock items. Independent distributors buy the products and resell them to end users, providing Ennis with most of its sales. Its brands include Ennis and PrintXcel; a smaller part of the business sells directly to customers, including banks through Northstar Computer Forms.
The business depends on continued demand for printed materials as electronic documents and payments replace paper, and on distributor relationships as those customers consolidate. Supply is also concentrated: one vendor provides most of its materials. Following the closure of the sole U.S. carbonless-paper mill, Ennis is moving to alternative suppliers, including overseas sources.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
Ennis’s results hinge on demand for printed business products as digital alternatives replace them, paper availability and pricing, and competition from manufacturers including R.R. Donnelley and Taylor Corporation.
EIA Crude Oil Stocks Change (Oct/16)
For Ennis, which makes custom printed products and ships them mainly through U.S. distributors, this release tracks crude oil and fuel stocks that can influence the fuel costs it pays to move products and the margins left when it cannot pass those costs on.
Read the stock change as a signal about fuel-cost pressure: a build may ease the transportation costs Ennis faces moving printed products to distributors, while a draw may raise those costs and squeeze margins if they cannot be passed on.
Ennis, Inc. earningsThis company
Ennis mainly sells printed products made to customer specifications through distributors, and this report will show whether demand, competitive pricing and paper costs still leave room to protect its margin.
Read organic sales alongside gross margin. Steady sales with a flat or higher margin would show that custom-product mix, pricing discipline and cost management are absorbing weak demand and the paper-supply transition. Falling sales with a narrower margin would show that lost volume or paper and other cost pressure is overwhelming those defenses, making Ennis’s print business less able to sustain profits.
